Celebrating the holidays gives you the ability to take advantage of decorating your indoor and outdoor environments. This gives you the chance to experiment with a myriad of decorations. Knowing how to decorate your outdoor planters for Christmas allows you to draw attention to your garden or landscape environment as well as the rest of your surroundings. Holiday garden decorating is enjoyable and gives you the opportunity to create a cheerful and festive scene for the holidays.

Things You'll Need
Christmas string lights
Spray can of snow
Artificial holly
Assorted holiday embellishments
Craft poinsettia

Step 1

Select string-lights in desirable lengths, designs and colors for your planters. For example, you can find 6 foot long and longer lengths of lighting, depending on the size of your planter. Commercially packaged string lights come with self-anchoring hooks. These allow you to attach the lights securely to the top edges of the planter with ease.

Step 2

Shake the can of snow vigorously. Hold it about 6 inches from the surface of the front of the planter. Press the nozzle firmly and release the flaky mixture. This gives the appearance of fresh, fluffy snow on your outdoor planter. Do this around all sides of the planter, and a tiny bit on the ground near the planter. This gives it a caked, snowy effect.

Step 3

Stuff the artificial holly plant into the planter if it is empty. If the planter contains a thriving plant already, simply place the holly near it as a wintry accent. As an optional alternative, you can use fresh-cut holly, but beware of its sharp, prickly leaves.

Step 4

Add an optional accent by hanging one or two plastic ornament balls from each corner of the outdoor planters you are decorating. Using shimmery balls of different colors gives the Christmas lights different things to reflect from for more accent.

Step 5

Center a large craft poinsettia to the front of the planter. Anchor the poinsettia into the fake snow. Use the flexible wires that protrude from the back of the poinsettia to hang over the inside, top edge of the planter. This keeps the flower in place. Craft poinsettias are silk versions of the festive poinsettia flower, only they have been embellished for use in homemade wreathes and other crafts. Select one that fits the theme you desire from a craft or hobby supply shop.

Tips
Add other completely optional embellishments to your decorated Christmas planter such as pine cones and clippings of evergreen plants. If these types of materials aren't easy to come by where you are, obtain them from craft and hobby supply stores.
