How to Decorate a Room by Adding One Unique Import

Susan Cross
Trying to make an ordinary room sparkle? Looking for a way to dress up a plain contemporary room and add a little pizzazz? Decorating can be intimidating and expensive but it doesn't have to be. If a simple room needs a decorator touch, but funds are limited and options are at a minimum, you can change the décor by adding one unique piece of furniture, an accessory or some special item that can be found in an imports store.

A particular item, especially if it's imported or hand made, can become the focal point of a boring room. Then by simply changing the lighting to highlight the addition, the room takes on a completely different appearance. Depending upon how much money is available for the transformation, the change in décor can be achieved by adding a new table, armoire or decorative screen imported from India, Bali, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Viet Nam or Europe. One distinctive piece of furniture, with a few small accessories to add accent, can give the illusion of a completely redecorated room.

For those who are more limited financially, accessories can accomplish a similar change in décor. A couple of silk, embroidered or beaded pillows can be used to embellish a plain solid sofa, or a painted jar on a table can provide an instant shift in the focus of the room.

Decorating items are available in retail chains, such as Pier 1, Bed Bath & Beyond, and others across the country, on the web. By looking on the Internet or in the phone book for the local imports stores, these may offer more unique items than the large chains. The smaller stores often feature unusual pieces from large furniture down to the smallest decorator items, such as imported candle holders. The most important consideration is choosing the appropriate piece for the room.

Follow these tips when selecting your piece and the addition is sure to be a success:

• Pay attention to scale;
For a small room, choose a piece that will stand out without taking over
Larger rooms require larger decorator items in order not to disappear in the space

• Avoid clutter; one carefully placed unique item can draw the eye's attention to it; a little can go a long way

• If the room has a lot of color or prints, choose something in black, white or dark wood so it doesn't blend in and get lost in the busy patterns

• A room with sharp lines and solid colors requires a printed, colorful accessory

• Simple is not necessarily boring; decorating a coffee table with a wooden or metal bowl can add an interesting touch

• Select pieces made of natural materials; there are so many different varieties of wood that can bring contrasting color to a room

• A wooden carving placed on a table or shelf created in an exotic country can make the difference

• Ask the salesperson about the piece and its origin when purchasing it so there is a story to tell when visitors comment on it

• If you have children or grandchildren, be careful to avoid sharp edges or anything breakable; your room can be decorated and still remain childproof

Another aspect of decorating can be accomplished through hanging unusual items on the wall. African or Asian masks, mirrors with carved wooden frames and fabric wall hangings can change the mood of the room. If choosing this route, keep the following tips in mind:

• Be strategic when hanging a picture or a mirror; centering a wall hanging may be perfect for a small wall, but for larger walls, groupings may be more appropriate

• Consider hanging a carved or hand painted room divider on a large wall

• Choose something appropriate for the size of the wall to avoid overpowering the room with it

Don't be afraid of decorating. Any room can get a facelift by changing just one element. By shopping at imports stores, this can be easily accomplished within every budget.
