How to Decorate a Room in an Apartment to Make it More Comfy

Chelsea Hoffman

Apartment living can seem cramped and uncomfortable, especially if you live in a studio apartment or quad-like setting. Knowing how to decorate your apartment space to be more comfortable gives you the opportunity to experiment with different accents, textures and styles that not only optimize the look of your place, but the feel of it, as well. When you decorate your apartment comfortably, it becomes a place where you can truly relax.

Things You'll Need
  • Tape measure
    Sketchpad
    Pencils
    Assorted furniture pieces
    Assorted accents

Step 1

Measure the dimensions of your apartment. You may already know the square footage, but knowing the length of each wall helps you compensate for the size and shape while decorating. Record these measurements on your sketchpad.

Step 2

Sketch out a quick diagram, or floor plan, of your apartment. Doing this helps you keep the size and shape of your apartment in perspective when it comes to selecting your new decor and furniture pieces. Note the colors of your flooring, walls and trim somewhere on the drawing.

Step 3

Select and arrange furniture in your empty apartment to begin the decorating process. The furniture you choose should be comfortable, as well as aesthetically pleasing. If you live by yourself in a studio, you can select any range of futon beds that fold into couches. Futons range in price and quality to cheap and uncomfortable to expensive and luxurious.

Step 4

Place a plush reading chair, bean-bag chair or other comfortable relaxing area by your futon or couch. This is your comfortable reading area, which adds a little depth and personality to the look of your apartment. At least one extra seating space like this helps in making your apartment look more comfortable.

Step 5

Accent the apartment with soft fabrics, textures and tones that match the theme of your apartment. Throw rugs and throw pillows are ideal and fashionable comfort pieces, as well as a decoratively placed fleece blanket.

Tips
  • Use feng shuiy resources on arranging furniture in therapeutic ways if it's something you're interested in trying. You can also read up on different colors and the feelings they inspire. For instance, a bedroom of pale, muted colors is probably more relaxing than a bedroom of bold tons of orange and canary.
