How to Decorate Staircases for Christmas

Do it Safely and Creatively

Many families look forward to decorating their houses for Christmas. They decorate the outside to impress their neighbors and put up the Christmas tree to impress their guests. Yet many families forget about decorating their staircases. A staircase is actually lots of fun to decorate for the Christmas holidays. The staircase itself quite often gives three different distinct areas to decorate. These include the railing, the poles that come down from the railing, and the wall of the staircase itself. All of these can be decorated for the Christmas holiday season.

Start by decorating the railing that goes along the stairs in the staircase itself first for the Christmas holiday season. One of the best decorations for the railing is lights. These are the same lights that you can purchase for your Christmas tree. Be careful when placing these on your staircase railing. Using wire-ties can keep the wires from hanging loosely near the stairs where people can trip on them. The Christmas holiday and one of America's favorite sports, football season, intersect, so why not celebrate both. Decorate your railing of your staircase with the colored lights using your favorite football team's colors.

After decorating the railing itself, there is still more to do. Many railings have metal or wooden decorative poles that extend down from them. Decorate these as well. One of the best options is garland or beads. These come in a variety of colors. You can do the traditional green garland, but why be boring? Once again choose some of your favorite colors. You can either alternate each pole with a different color, or twist the different strands of garland together and use this one large strand to run around all the poles on your staircase.

Now that you have decorated your staircase for the Christmas holiday, what about the wall in the staircase area? This is a great place to put up pictures. Your guests will love to see photographs of past Christmas holiday events you had at your house. Use the staircase wall to display family Christmas photographs, photographs of your house from outside, and photographs of you and your friends having fun at previous Christmas holiday parties and get togethers.

Combining decorating your railing of your staircase, the poles around the staircase, and the walls surrounding the staircase will give your staircase a complete Christmas holiday theme. This year when doing your Christmas holiday decorations, don't forget about your staircase.

  • Decorate the railing, poles, and walls
  • Use colored lights representing your favorite football team
  • Make sure you replace family photos that are already on staircase walls with holiday themed ones.
If your restroom is located on a different level than your main living area in your home, your guests will be likely to use your staircase.
