How to Decorate a Unisex Nursery

Emily Harmon
Against the wishes of many people around us, my husband and I decided not to find out the gender of our son before he was born. We really wanted to be surprised and despite a few inconveniences in preparing for the baby to be born, we are still thrilled with our decision. One of the top concerns for couples who choose not to know the gender of their baby before the birth is how to decorate the nursery. Unisex nursery design does exist and can be just as adorable and fun as gender-specific nursery themes. Check out these design ideas for a unisex nursery theme.

Colors. The first thing to consider when creating a unisex nursery theme is a color palette. Pink and blue are no-nos, period. Even though blue can work just fine for a baby girl's bedroom, if you're trying to decorate a unisex nursery and you use blue, everyone will make the assumption that you thought you were having a boy. Yellow and green aren't your only options here either. You can choose a bright array of pastels including orange, yellow, and green if you want something fairly traditional. Or you can always go with primary colors like blue and red. Black and white with just a hint or red or lime green is another chic way to choose colors for a unisex nursery.

Themes. Choosing a theme for a unisex nursery can be another challenge. Some themes, such as trucks, butterflies, or flowers are out. Other popular themes, such as animals can work really well in a unisex nursery. A simpler nursery theme is also an option. Try choosing a geometric shape such as squares or circles. These simple themes can be wonderful in a unisex nursery.

Furniture. Most nursery furniture does not have a gender-specific look, but there are some nursery furniture options you should avoid when decorating a unisex nursery. First of all, white nursery furniture almost always appears in a girl's nursery room. Black nursery furniture, however, will work for a unisex nursery theme. Naturally stained nursery furniture will work just fine for a unisex nursery theme. Just avoid any furniture with a lot of detailing which can sometimes look "girlish."

Decorating a unisex nursery can be a little challenging, but it can also be a lot of fun. Unisex nursery themes can be just as adorable as gender-specific themes with just a few little touches. Don't let anyone tell you that you should find out the gender of your baby just so you can create a cute nursery. Follow these tips and no one will deny your precious unisex nursery is just perfect for your little one.

We chose not to find out our daughter's sex (all those years ago!). This is very helpful!
