How to Decorate an Upside Down Christmas Tree
Tips for Decorating a Christmas Tree Hanging Upside Down
1. With the widest portion of the tree, which will be positioned near the ceiling, a fun accent is to make it resemble a holiday head wreath. By using a mixture of faux green leaves, red berries and candles (either unlit wax candles or electric) around the rim, the top of the Christmas tree (or the bottom!) can be the showpiece it always is, even upside down.
2. Before wrapping garland around the Christmas tree, consider taking longer streaks of thin silver and wrapping this around the garland in a diagonally leaning fashion to add an eye trick to Christmas fun.
3. If one wanted to emphasize the unusual qualities of an upside down Christmas tree, a fun way to do this would be to place a reflective surface underneath and behind the tree to add a unique visual element.
4. A fun do it yourself decoration for an upside down tree is to take pictures of family members hanging upside down (from a sofa, monkey bars, etc.) and printing the pictures out, laminating them, and placing them on the tree as ornaments. This works especially well for family members with extra hair as they will look like they are dangling from the tree!
5. A pulsating upside down Christmas tree look can be accomplished by taking a surplus of round Christmas ornaments, stringing them tightly together and then tying the string at a concealed portion of the tree. Make several of these strings and have them stagger down the tree. When done correctly with a sparkly ornament they will draw attention to the dramatic shape.
6. A variety of icicle and top-like ornaments also work really well at accenting the fun shape of an upside down holiday tree as their sharp edges and points are always pulling the eye down. Using these types of ornaments always accents the length.
7. A fun idea to add some oomph between the ceiling and the "top" of an upside down Christmas tree is to use some batting or fluffy loose cotton to create a "snow pile." Be sure to avoid placing these materials near any lights that would heat them though!
8. Another great do it yourself project is to take some tall and thin cylindrical pieces of Styrofoam and decorate them for the holidays whether with swanky wrapping paper or paint and glitters and then hang them at geometric angles from the tree. This look can make the tree resemble a giant wind chime, and if a small bell is attached to each piece, it can even sound fun too!
9. If the upside down Christmas tree is mounted to the wall instead of suspended from the ceiling don't stop at trimming the tree, add some interesting shape to the walls appearing on either side of the tree. Whether the display is staggered Christmas cards or the family Christmas stocking, fun visual elements on either side of the tree will bring extra attention!
10. If a white upside down Christmas tree is purchased, considering decorating it with a theme, but let the mind play and think of fun ways to work with the angle and shape. Whether ornaments of similar colors are geometrically blocked or the tree is made to resemble a piece of Christmas candy dangling from the ceiling, make it fun - make it memorable!
