How to Decorate a White Room

Lori Godin
There are many things that we can do to decorate a white room and remove the stark and cool feel from it. Accessories, fabrics, and window treatments are only some of the things that we can implement into a white room to increase the warmth.

Fabrics can add dimension to any room - use fabrics wherever possible to create a luxurious feel. Velvets, silks and wool are three of my favorite fabrics to use in window treatments and walls. I find these three fabrics used together in a window treatment of the same or varying colors have a great effect on the space, making it feel warm, cozy and inviting, as well as being stylish and eclectic.

While trying to decorate a white room than there are many ways to do so without changing the color of the walls. There are great pieces of furniture, large pieces of art, window treatments, but also such options as removable borders, or removable wall paper. Consider making a wall a focal point and covering the wall with a printed wall paper.

Art can be a great way to liven up a room and add color. Consider choosing a piece of art that will become the focal point of the room, something that takes up an entire wall. I recommend a piece of art that is the same theme but divided into three to four sections. This focal point will take away from the whiteness of the walls and make the space feel defined.

After choosing the focal point for the room, consider building from that focal point and choosing fabrics and furniture that compliment rather than contribute to the white feel of the room.

The benefit of having a white room is that it is comparable to a blank canvas. Choose any color that you would like, and they are sure to go well with the space. Warm colors may create a hot room, but be careful because the contrast may be too deep. When using colors such as pinks and reds, it is important to pair these with colors that are cool and will transition with the white, such as lilacs, teals, turquoises or reds and purples with hues of blues and greens, and grey.

If you have the tools, the skill, or the resources consider creating a focal point with built in shelves. These shelves could create an effect that will draw the eye of anyone who enters the room.

Create dimension in the room with crown Moulding or chair rails. To add dimension to a white room, my favorite idea is decorative molding in geometrical shapes at intervals around the room. This gives the room age, as well as personality.

Here are some of my favorite ways to liven up a white room. Like I said, it is a blank canvas that anything can be done with. Plan accordingly, and the room should be complete in no time!
