How to Decorate with White on White Decor

White on white decor can vary in its style and appearance. To some, it can be cold and sterile. To others, it's a cozy and inviting style of decor. Plus, a white on white palette can be used in any room of the home: the office, the kitchen, the bathroom or a bedroom. Here are a few basic tips to consider when decorating with this color palette.

Understanding the White Color Palette

For many people, white is simply that: white. But, the reality is, there are actually several different types of white available. This includes off white, snow white, white linen, pure white, bright white, eggshell, cloudy white, milk white and so forth.

So, when choosing a shade of white, keep in mind that you don't need to stick to one exact shade of white. In fact, you may find that using only one shade of white makes things unnecessarily difficult.

Tips for Decorating with a White on White Color Palette

Before you even consider making any purchases for your new white on white decor, stop and really think about what you are about to embark upon. Will a white on white color scheme work for your home? If you own a dog, a cat, or you have children, then the answer might be no. White is a difficult color that quickly shows wear and tear, dirt, dust and grime. It is extremely difficult to keep clean, especially if there are children or pets running around. However, rules are made to be broken and if you think your home can handle the white on white, then go for it!

As mentioned before, not all whites are created equally. If you're insistent upon using exact colors, then be sure to carry around paint chips or fabric samples that match the colors of other pieces that you've already purchased and will be present in the design. This will help you ensure that any additional pieces, whether they be furniture, a vase, a painting or some other type of home decor piece, all match.

Whether you're using a single shade of white or multiple shades of white for a room, put the focus more onto texture rather than onto the color. Choosing different items with different textures will help you create more interest in the room.

For example, a tufted sofa, an antique white chest for a coffee table, a clear glass lamp base paired with a woven white lamp shade and white ribbed vases all feature different textures. The tufts of the sofa, the worn wood of the chest, the clear glass lamp base and the ribbing of the vases all add interest to the white on white decor of the room.

Lastly, when decorating using white, think outside of the box. Even something as simple as a brightly colored set of throw pillows, a bold painting or even a clear glass jar filled with white buttons can add interest to a room without being too overpowering.
