Mother's Day Box
Materials:
Unfinished wooden box or a wooded cigar box
2 jars of acrylic paint in mom's favorite color. 1 light and 1 medium
Picture from a magazine, napkin, wrapping paper or wallpaper of a flower, butterfly, angel, whatever mom would like
Small amount of material to cover inside bottom of box (velvet looks nice)
1 yard of decorative cording or satin braided cording
White glue or decoupage finish
Paint brush
Sponge (sea foam sponges work great if you have one)
Piece of wax paper or plastic bag
Measuring tape
Scissors
Paint the wooden box inside and out with the medium colored paint; let dry. Put some of the light paint in a small dish or saucer, have the wax paper or bag by you. *Take the sponge and dip a small part of it into the light colored paint, dab slightly on to the wax paper to remove excess paint. Next take the sponge and gently sponge around on the top and sides of the box. Repeat this step * until the box has the desired amount of sponging you would like on it and let dry.
Now take the white glue (slightly watered down) or the decoupage finish and cover the top and sides of it with the paint brush. While top is still tacky and the picture(should be trimmed and pretty) that you picked out for the box and center it on the top, press gently to get any air bubble out and brush on more glue on the top of the picture and let dry.
Next measure the inside of the box and cut the material accordingly.
Take the glue and brush it on the inside bottom of the box, taking extra care to have enough in the corners and press the material down onto glue. Measure the inside of the box all the way around and cut a piece of the cording that length. Take glue and put it around the edge of all the material and starting in a corner press the cording along the whole inside edge of the box.
For the final step brush glue one more time on the whole top of the box and while still tacky take some cording and run it along the outer top edge of the box, adding more glue if necessary.
Inside the box you may want to put a few favorite pictures of you and mom, her favorite candy or perfume.
