Flower Pot Serving Platter
Supplies:
Medium clay flower pot
Medium clay saucer
Glue gun and glue sticks
Pictures and cards for decoupaging
Scissors
Modge Podge
Small sponge brush
Small paint brush
Accent color in acrylic paint
Varnish
Wooden disc slightly larger than the top of the flower pot
Directions:
1. Once you decide on the theme of your serving platter, find and cut pictures with this theme from magazines and old cards. I have made this platter with a fruit and retro theme for gifts. Both themes make beautiful serving platter designs.
2. Wash and dry both the flower pot and clay saucer. Cover work area with a small plastic tarp or large plastic bag. Place the pot, wooden disc and saucer on the tarp.
3. Pour a small amount of paint in an old bowl or plate. Paint both the top and bottom of the wooden disc. Let dry.
4. Starting with the flower pot, decoupage a section at a time. I find decoupaging in sections gets the best results. Pour a small amount of Modge Podge in an old bowl or plate. Dip sponge brush in the Modge Podge, then carefully brush on the back and front of the first piece. Place the first piece at the bottom of the flower pot. Gently smooth out air bubbles and wrinkles with the brush or your fingers. Take a slightly damp sponge and dab the piece to make sure it is secure to the flower pot. Repeat this step until the entire clay pot is covered. When you get to the rim of the flower pot, make sure the decoupaged pieces overlap approximately 1/4 inch to the inside rim of the flower pot. Let dry.
5. Repeat the directions in step 4 when decoupaging the clay saucer. Make sure both top and bottom of the saucer are completely covered with the decoupaged pieces. Let dry.
6. Check both the saucer and flower pot to make sure the pieces are secure. If there are pieces that have unsecured ends, place a little more decoupage to the ends. Let dry.
7. Paint the decoupaged saucer and flower pot with a coat of varnish. This will help seal the pieces for the serving platter. Let dry.
8. Trace a line of glue around the rim of the flower pot with the glue gun. Place the painted wooden disc centered on the rim. This is the base of the serving platter.
9. Trace a line of glue around the bottom of the flower pot with the glue gun. Place the clay saucer centered on the bottom of the pot. This is the top of the serving platter.
10. For added security, reapply glue around the pieces that were glued together to form the flower pot serving platter.
The website www.craftparts.com offers large wooden discs needed to make the decoupaged flower pot serving platter.
