How to Deepen Natural Eye Contours

Monica Bullock

Women with a mono lid, or hooded eyes, find getting those contoured eye looks challenging. I have slightly hooded eyes myself and I know that getting a contour and not a fake black eye requires finesse. Make your eyes look deeper, sultrier by adding eye contour when you need it. Before you practice, you'll need a magnifying mirror and varying hues of your favorite eye shadow shade. Get to know your eyes a little and you'll be able to master the contour anytime you like.

Moisturize the eye first. Always use a specific eye cream, not a facial cream. Touch the eye with your clean finger tips and pat the cream in. Allow the cream to soak in your skin at least 30 seconds before continuing.

Prime the eye with a primer. This handy product will hold eye shadow in place and make it look deeper, more brilliant.

Sweep the entire eyelid using an eye shadow brush. Of course, load it first by brushing the top across the lightest color in your chosen palette. The eye shadow needs to go from below the brow to the top of the lashes.

Dab a medium liquid eye shadow onto the tip of your middle finger. Close the eyelid then use your pointer finger to touch the lid, feeling the contour from the left to the right. Look in the mirror to see where you are touching.

Tap the eye shadow into the natural eye socket, making small dots. Then smooth the shadow in with the pinky finger. Continue and do the same for the opposite side.

Tip the slanted eye shadow brush into the darkest eye shadow. Edge the dark color into the outer edge of the contour. Use your pinky finger or a long-tipped eye shadow brush to smooth the colors together.

Finish your contoured eye look. Apply smooth eyeliner across the top lashes and a healthy dose of mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

With some practice you'll learn how to work a contour into a smooth eyelid. Don't be afraid to try colors and color combinations you don't normally wear.
