How to Defeat Twilight Ice Mass in Zelda Twilight Princess

Chris Tidwell
Once you have beaten the first three levels of Zelda Twilight Princess you'll be thrust into a new portion of the game, and have to achieve a new goal, gathering the shattered pieces of the Mirror of Twilight in order to defeat Zant. This quest will start with you having to gather the first shard located on the Ice Mountain to the East of Zoras Domain. This level located in the mansion of a snow monster is not really all that difficult, however the boss monster can prove to be challenging if you don't know what to do.

Twilight Ice Mass is the creature that holds the first shard of the Twilight Mirror you're looking to gather. This creature is the evil spirit of the mirror shard in the body of the snow monsters wife, and she can be a tough monster to fight. There will be two forms of this boss so be prepared for a rather lengthy battle. Make sure you have plenty of healing items with you, which should be readily available since you helped the snow monster make soup earlier in the level. The Superb Soup will act just like a Red Potion, healing Link with up to 8 hearts, so make sure that you have you're bottles filled with the Superb Soup before entering this boss fight.

The first form Twilight Ice Mass takes on is that of a huge Ice ball. She will rush Link and also spin out small projectiles with spikes to deal damage. The best way to handle this form is to strap on your Iron Boots and use the ball and chain as your primary weapon. In fact your sword will not be needed at all during this fight. Pull out the ball and chain and hold down the B button to swing it high above your head. This will hit Twilight Ice Mass when she rushes you, and will protect you from the projectiles she shoots, for the most part. During this first round you won't have to move much, just as long as you keep your ball and chain ready. Also if Twilight Ice Mass stops, which she tends to do every once in a while, just aim and fire the ball and chain for an extra hit.

Now once you have the first round over and done with you'll have to brace for the real fight. Twilight Ice Mass will now hover in some kind of ice structure above the arena and summon huge ice sickles to drop down and crush Link. For this portion of the fight take off your Iron Boots so you can move freely. Use the ice covered arena as a mirror to see what your opponent is doing while hovering above you. From the right vantage point you'll be able to see and dodge attacks just fine.

Watch for the ice sickles to fall behind Link, and never stop running. The trick is to know when to attack, once you destroy all the ice sickles, there should be about 10, you'll be able to attack the ice structure Twilight Ice Mass is hiding in. While running around the arena watch for the ice sickles to fall, if they fall in a straight line then once the last one drops turn quickly and attack with the ball and chain, destroying as many of the vicious ice sickles as you possible can. Then when the ice sickles retreat back up into the air start running again. If the ice sickles fall in a circular pattern be ready to make some quick moves because the structure holding Twilight Ice Mass is going to fall quickly and try and crush Link. If this happens roll quickly to dodge the attack, and if you have time retaliate with an attack with the ball and chain, but most of the time dodging is going to be all you have time to do.

After destroying all the ice sickles and hitting the second form of Twilight Ice Mass three times you'll have won the battle, saved the snow monsters wife, gained a shard of the Mirror, and be one step closer to beating Zelda Twilight Princess.
