A Republican is someone who wants the Federal Government to give up power to the States. Republicans want the Federal Government to shrink, and for the State Governments to grow. They believe that the Federal Government's job is to keep everything flowing like a manager, and should not have a large workload that will take it away from doing its task.
Over the last six years, President Bush has pushed for the Federal Government to expand and have more power. President Bush has signed more powers over to FEMA, created the Office of Homeland Security, increased the scope of the CIA and FBI, and signed the Patriot Act into law.
All of these actions have increased the size and scope of the Federal Government, something that he should be against since he is a Republican. Granted, changes needed to be made after 9/11, but the increases have caused for more problems then they were worth.
The prime example for this would be the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. FEMA had been given all of the power and responsibility for the disaster. Instead of being able to rely on other sectors in the Government, FEMA had to try to do everything itself.
Most of the specialists that had been moved into FEMA from other areas were not familiar with the disaster relief programs that FEMA ran. Many of the new college students that were hired did not have the experience to deal with a disaster.
Also, FEMA had been given powers that had originally been held by the States. FEMA was not intoned to dealing with the States on the level that they needed to for the disaster. The States that were affected by the storm and damage did not like the fact that they had to take direction from an outside group.
During this entire time when President Bush was signing all of these new bills into law, and getting everything he was requesting, most Republicans were allowing it to happen. There were very few that wanted to rock the boat and make others think that they were unpatriotic.
During this entire time, President Bush was pushing that anyone who did not stand with him on the changes that he needed to make was unpatriotic. The Republicans in Congress allowed the President to completely go against what they believed so that they did not look bad in front of the American people.
Now that these same Republicans are realizing that the decisions made were not the best for the American people, they are scrambling around trying to figure out how they are going to rectify their image. They are wondering how it has become that Republicans are being known for wanting to increase the size and power of the Federal Government.
The Republicans are also looking at the Democrats who voted against these changes and wondering how the Democrats knew enough to realize that these changes were not good. The Republicans are wondering how they have changed places with the Democrats as being the political party that wants the Federal Government to have more power and control of the American people.
Currently, it is very easy to tell that many in Congress are trying to distance themselves from President Bush. Just watch the debates and see how many of the Republicans are trying to show how they are diffferent from Bush.

Post a CommentHaving republican views does not mean "being for big business and the rich." Republicans believe it is best for all classes to let free enterprise take its course and for us to have control of our own money instead of the government taking it and redistributing it any way they see fit. Kennedy was an exception to typical liberal thinking and his words "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" were "right on"! Anyway, I enjoyed reading the article, very interesting.
Ah, but I take issue...the republicans have been acting exactly as what and who they are...greedy, selfish, usurous, power-hungry, hypocritical, and self-righteous.
I agree that Ron Pual is the only true republican running for office.
L.
By your definition Ron Paul is the only real Republican running for president. Anyway I somewhat agree with what you are saying but I think it's much worse than that. I think Bush is the worst of both worlds combined.
George Washington once commented that he hoped the government would be run by individuals, not political parties and I tend to agree with him. At one time, they had a use because the average American citizen didn't know what the issues were and wasn't able to gain enough information regarding a candidate so they just voted for the party they believed best fit their interests. However, with television and the Internet, it's not that hard to research a candidate and find out which one has the same views as you. Political parties now hinder that process since politicians on both sides tend to do what their counterparts do for fear of losing their party support.
You mean Bushies act like democrats? There is no room for generalization Sr. There are many honorable Republicans who have never acted like Democrats. One more thing. It is time to stop choosing sides here. Choosing sides is expired. This country needs unity under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. No Republican or Democrat will do anything to make it better, because there will always be a guy across the street bashing him. Siding ourselves as Democrats or Republicans will simply dig us further in. Wake up and stop going with the propaganda we are fed everyday.
There has been a merging of the stances of the two Parties over the last twenty years. There has never been a President who was not considered to be rich by today's standards, but that does not have a basis as for political party.
L.
I have never seen any difference between either party. The upper echelon of both parties are made up of members of the upper class. Name the last president from either party who wasn't a millionaire. They might have some different views on some things like abortion but I find it hard to seriously believe any politician would do what's best for the middle class if it takes away from their outside income. I've always believed there should be income limits on those who are allowed to run for a national office based on the average salary for each state (for Congress and Senate) and for the national average salary (for president).
My 9 year old son could run this country better than this idiot.........He's not working for the Republicans or the people.....he's working for a bunch of rich people (Haliburtin) Ect. We should throw him out with our bare hands......
I always saw Republicans as being for big business and the rich, whereas Democrats were for the people, human rights and the poor. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" was what gave me the idea that Democrats were anti-Big Brother govenment. GWB appears to be a meglomanic psychotic.
