How to De-Ice Your Car

Alicia Bodine
Nights can get really cold in the winter. You wake up and get ready for work, only to find out that the car is covered in ice. If you try to de-ice your car in a hurry, you might do some serious damage to it. It is better to be patient and use the proper methods to de-ice your car. It is best if you are prepared ahead of time so that you won't have to waste any time deciding what to do.

You will need:

Rain-X products
Ice scraper

Follow these steps:

Step 1:
Treat your windshield and glass car windows with Rain-X before the cold weather comes. You can purchase a spray or some wipes. This will not stop ice from forming on the windshield, but it will make removing the ice much easier.

Step 2:
Turn your car on and run it for 10 minutes without turning your heater on. If you turn your heater on right away, you could crack the glass windows and windshield.

Step 3:
Turn your car on defrost and spray the windshield with Rain-X De-Icer. You need to spray the entire windshield from top to bottom. Give it a minute or two to melt away the ice and then use your windshield wipers to get the ice the rest of the way off.

Step 4:
Spray the Rain-X on the rest of your car and then use an ice scraper to easily scrape away the ice. This spray works great if you are having trouble getting in to your car because the door or key lock is frozen.

Step 5:
Keep snow off of your car. If it is snowing outside, you should brush the snow off of your car at least once an hour. The snow can turn to ice in the middle of the night and freeze to your car. It will be much easier to get in to your car in the morning if you have done your part by keeping the snow off of the car as much as possible.

Tips:
Refrain from using credit cards or other objects to scrape the ice off of your car. This could cause scratches and even cracks that will be costly to repair.

Warning:
Do not pour hot water down your windshield to melt away the ice. This can crack the windshield.

Step 2 When you turn your car on turn the heat on FULL PAST FIRST! It will blow cold air and will gradually heat up. If you wait then turn it on HOT AIR will hit your ICE COLD windshield and could cause thermal shock (breakage)
