Trouble comes in when the burden is left entirely on whoever is managing the family budget, especially if a problem occurs like when a credit card debt explodes. To say the least, whoever is managing the debts will get overwhelmed, particularly if there is no viable way of controlling credit card spending. This is when it gets to everyone's responsibility.
The family should get together and whoever is managing the budget should discuss with all family members on the loopholes to be avoided to thwart credit card abuse. Make all concerned parties know of financial responsibility, and any slight abuse of the credit card will mean taking away the privilege of the card.
When it comes to tackling credit card debt, the family unit plays a very big role. It may require some skill to explain the magnitude of tackling this enemy as a family. If the mission is successful, it will not only tighten the family ties, but will also be a very fun filled adventure. The strategy should be viewed as a belligerent attack plan on the credit card debt monster that is shaking the family's financial safety. The attack plan should be one aimed at cost-cutting. Let everyone do something worthwhile each week.
This may be something like turning off unused lights in the house, cutting down the number of times one has to go to the movies, or even giving up cable TV. Equally, let each member come up with a way of increasing family income. It may mean the kids assuming more responsibilities in the house so that the parents get second jobs. It may also mean the kids looking for easy part time jobs that will help perk up the budget.
If each family member contributes, however little the contribution may be, it will go a long way. What is more, the self esteem and sense of achievement that each person will be immeasurable, and will become a valuable family venture.
