How to Delete URLs From the Address Bar Dropdown List

A Tutorial on Deleting Web Addresses from Browsers Address Bar Dropdown List

The Armchair Geek
When you enter a web address directly into the Internet Explorer address bar, the URL will be saved in Internet Explorer's history. The web address will appear in the dropdown list of the Internet Explorer address bar. It is highly recommended that you periodically delete these entries for security and privacy reasons.

You can delete these entries by clearing Internet Explorer's history or disabling it altogether by disabling AutoComplete. Instead of clearing the entire list, you may want to delete a few select entries from the Internet Explorer address bar. To do this, you will need to edit the registry to delete specific entries.

Here's how to manually edit the registry to remove typed URLs that are saved in the Internet Explorer address bar.
*First click the Start button located at the bottom left corner of the desktop.
*Click the Run button that appears on the Start menu.
*When the Run window appears, type regedit and click OK. The Registry Editor should open.
*You will need to navigate to the following registry entry: HKEY_CURRENTUSERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerTyped URLs. You can navigate by clicking the plus signs next to each corresponding section.
*When this registry entry is opened, you should find a list of individual keys.
=> Under the Name column, you should see URL 1, URL 2, URL 3, URL 4, URL 5, URL 6...
=> Under the Data column, you should see each of the corresponding URLs (e.g. www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, www.wwe.com, etc).
*You can delete individual URLs by right-clicking the URL in the Name column and clicking Delete.
*When you are done deleting all of your unwanted URLs, close the Registry Editor

Now, when you open Internet Explorer and check the dropdown list, the URL should be gone.

Alternatives

If you use FireFox, you can simply drop the address bar list and highlight the unwanted website and click Ctrl + Delete to remove the website.

If you prefer not to use the Registry Editor to remove unwanted URLs from the dropdown list on the address bar, you can download a specific program to perform that task for you.

*EditURLs is a free browser utility that allows the user to edit individual URL addresses in Internet Explorer's address bar.
*Another competent program to use is IE Address Bar Editor. This program also allows you to remove individual URL entries from Internet Explorer's dropdown list; however, it is not as easy to use as EditURLs.

I tried the regedit method described. I receive a message "Unable to delete all specified values." The unwanted URL remains in my drop down box. Now what?

Computer "Dummy" came to someone's mind when they met me. But your explanation is so clear even I got it. Works very nicely. Thank you so much.

Ummm.. this doesn't work. For your advice about firefox, yes it removes it temporarily. However, it just comes right back.
