How to Design Your Dream Room on a Budget

Guide to Finding the Right Home Decor Accessories

Nanette Haz
Shopping for your home décor accessories at the end of the season can save you hundreds of dollars. Discount retailers, and even upscale department stores have beautiful merchandise that is taking up valuable space. Do you know how to truly spot a discount? Here are 3 tips to help you find the best home décor bargains.

Quality

Select what type of quality you want for your home. If you are shopping for a growing child's playroom décor, then you may not be purchasing top of the line items. However, if these accessories or furniture pieces will be in your front room for receiving guests, your goal is to get the best you can comfortably afford. Go to discount stores that may offer last season's new upscale accessories, rugs, curtains, candles, and furniture brand new at a considerable discount. Shops such as Ross, Marshalls, TJ Max, and The Home Store have the same items available for much more at larger furniture stores.

Original Price

Always find out what the original price was. Scratch and dent sales, clearance, tent sales, and end of season sale prices always seem better when you know what the original retail price was. Twenty to thirty percent off, is not a large savings. If there is a flaw in the item, always ask for a discount. If you are buying a large quantity or an expensive item ask for a cash discount.

Personal Style

Know what styles you personally are drawn to. If you enjoy Modern furniture styles, do not shop at a store that offers Country style décor. This shop will not have patterns with the shapes or colors you are looking for. For example if you are looking for a nice rug with clean lines and vibrant modern colors, you will not find what you are looking for. This shop may have merchandise is nice traditional colors, pastels, primary colors, and traditional country patterns.

Colors

Have an idea of the color palette you want to present in the finished room. If the living room you are decorating has furniture in a neutral shade of brown, find out before hand what colors you want to accent that brown with. If you are afraid of color, do not pick white. Even a light shade of a contrasting color will give your room more interest than white. Look at color wheels to find examples of contrasting colors.

Having a plan while shopping during end of season sales, can help you use your time wisely. Knowing exactly what colors and shapes you want in your room can cut down on picking out things, simply because they are on sale. Plan to spend money during sales. By being prepared to spend when things are truly on sale, you can stretch your home decorating budget. Use these tips to help you decorate your home with accessories and furniture, that truly express your personal style to your guests and family.
