How to Destroy a First Date

Tips for the Women Who Wants to Lose, or Keep, a Guy After the First Date

Christine Cadena
If you are a single woman struggling to meet "Mr. Right", there may be some key changes you need to make in your approach to a first date. Because the first date is often the deal breaker for many potential long term relationships, women often become overwhelmed by the ways in which to impress a potential partner, losing sight of their true selves and, ultimately, destroying all love possibilities.

When experiencing a first date, there are some ground rules that should be followed. Even if called upon for a second or third date, these ground rules, when followed, will provide for a greater opportunity to find love and develop a more meaningful relationship.

During a first date, you will want to provide your dating partner with a picture of your life outside of the home. In other words, most men already know that women, at some point in their lives, desire to be a mother and a wife. So, to capture the attention of a man you are dating, you will want to describe the aspects of your life that make you different from other women. What do you like to do outside of the home? Are you involved in charity work? Are you continuing your education? Do you have a career? While you never want to fabricate these facts, it is important to talk about what is truly going on in our life and not focus on babies and housecleaning so much.

Another turn off to a man is a woman who comes across as extremely picky, especially on a first date. This can often be displayed in something as simple as dining out. If you are generally a person who does not like specific types of food, simply avoid those foods when ordering dinner. All too often, I have seen a woman intentionally choose a food that she will not necessarily enjoy, request changes be made to the preparation, hoping her picky eating habits will be portrayed as that of a woman who knows what she wants. In contrast, this is not the message a man receives and, instead, he may interpret this simple menu as a larger picture into you as a high-maintenance woman.

Another huge complication that may arise during a first date, and destroy the opportunity for a second date, are situations where your discussions may become too opinionated. While most of us know to avoid discussions of politics and religion over dinner, sometimes these discussions can not be avoided. So, if you are in a situation where a discussion of great opinion has come to surface, try to remain calm, relatively non-opinionated and work to change the subject to something more lighthearted. While men like to discuss heavy topics, they will, initially, be turned off by a woman who is very aggressive and opinionated on a first date. Save these discussions for dates several weeks or months later.

For many single women, there is a genuine desire to impress and please a man on a first date. All too often, this eager approach to dating leads to failure. If you are heading out onto your first date, consider following these general guidelines and you will find, in many cases, you will be well on your way to the second and third date in no time at all.

The L word is a touchy subject. It should definitely not even be thought of until it's meant...which is a pretty good distance into the relationship. People who rush into that sort of thing are most likely immature when it comes to dating or are emotionally immature and have not found themselves in themselves within the confines of the subject of the "Love issue."

Great advice. Nothing sends people running like saying, "I love you" on the first date. This goes for guys and gals. I had a guy tell me that he loved me the first time we spoke on the phone and all I could say was, "Thanks." LOL
