Contrary to what some believe, you do not need a bunch of chemicals to have a productive garden. All it takes is some knowledge of how the plant and animal world work and you can get the desired results using natural methods. It is a good feeling to know that you and your family can enjoy your yard and garden without worrying if you are going to become ill from the chemicals on the plants.
The first thing to do to help detoxify your garden is to start a compost pile. Once you have a cycle going of a compost pile that is completed and one that is in the works, you will have an endless supply of organic fertilizer.
There are also many methods to get rid of insects. One way to get rid of aphids is to purchase ladybugs and let them loose in your yard. Many people believe it is the ladybugs who are eating their plants. This is not true, however. It is aphids who suck the liquids out of the plants. They live under leaves and on the stems. Ladybugs will eat the aphids. You can purchase them at most nurseries. Sometimes, a strong blast with your garden hose will get a large amount of the insects off of your plants.
Companion planting is another way to keep the insects at bay. There are several plants that will attract beneficial insects to your garden. Some of these would include all types of daisies, anything in the carrot family, and anything in the mint family. The carrot family includes such plants as Queen Anne's lace, sweet alyssum, chervil and caraway. The mint family will include all the familiar mints and also basil and oregano.
Something else to consider is how much the insects like the plants you are choosing for your vegetable, herb and flower gardens. Some will attract many more insects that others. For example, Tropicana roses will attract many more aphids than Angel Face. You may have to discover this on your own. However, asking at your local nursery or garden store may get you the information you need.
There are also many plants that will keep the bugs away from your garden. Marigolds are the best at keeping insects away. If you have roses, planting garlic between them will keep the Japanese beetles away. To keep away flies and mosquitoes plant basil. It will also help your tomatoes grow well. Horseradish should be planted if you have a problem with potato bugs.
If you are looking for something you can spray on your plants, there are a few ways to do that without chemicals, as well. Chop up some hot chili peppers. Mix them with water and dish detergent. This alone will keep many insects off of your plants. If you want to kick it up a notch, add some garlic and onion to the mixture. You can also dry the chili peppers, gorund them up, and use them to dust your plants. There are also a few organic pesticides that are available to purchase. Ask at your local garden store or nursery.
There are a few precautions that you need to know about. You should never apply anything to your plants in the heat of the day. If any children or pets are present, do not apply any type of chemicals to your garden. If it is an area where children or pets may wanter, be sure it is completely dry before they are allowed in the area. If you decide you are going to use chemicals, be sure to keep your family safe.
There is yet another way to help control insects in your yard and garden. Birds will make a meal of any insects that are within their reach. Place birdbaths and feeders to attract birds. The sound and movement of a fountain will attract birds, also. Birds are also attracted to a yard free from chemicals. They will help you, if you help them by feeding and housing them.
Getting rid of the chemical you use is a wonderful way to detoxify your yard and garden. Once you are using natural methods to take care of your outside area, you will be able to confidently relax knowing you and your family are safe from poisons. Your yard will become a wonderful place to spend time with friends and family.
