The key data is never go by a misunderstood word or symbol, as unknown words create a mystery and stupidity. It doesn't matter from where you got it, whether from TV, person, lecturer, internet, teacher, book, label in grocery store, math book etc, so get the habit to keep with you a dictionary at all time. Make sure that dictionary's level will be easy and suit your level. That is mean, will not give you further misunderstood even if you need to look it up in a children dictionary, otherwise you will go into sort of rat race. As your vocabulary grows, you can change dictionary to the more advance level. In case that the word is not appearing in the dictionary you are using, or it is a technical word, then check it up in the next higher-level dictionary or technical dictionary. Technical dictionary can be about aviation, landscaping, computers etc. If you don't have dictionary at hand, ask the lecturer or person politely what is the meaning of the word, he just said. You can also write it down, and after the lecture or film over ask or check it out in the dictionary.
You can use electronic dictionary, which, will be easy to carry. Personally, that is what I am usually doing. I am using it even when I am watching films.
These are the main methods to enrich your vocabulary and your ability to communicate.
How you will clear the misunderstood word or symbol you encountered? you do it as follow:
You will need to look up the word in the dictionary by first browsing through all the definitions, to find the one that fit to the context. Use the word by making sentences or write them down, until you feel you got and feel good about the word. The good feeling manifests that you captured the new word in your mind. It is usually come after three sentences or so. Sometime, it can take over 10 sentences as well.
Don't discourage, make sure you feel good on applying the new word in your own sentences. Making sentences is what causing you to retain the word, so don't skip this phase. When you got the word, you will know it, and you feel you want to read more and more.
Step 2:
Read! Read! And Read! The more words read and clear per above, the more words you will know. I personally make sentences of the word that fit to my life. For example, if the misunderstood word is "perplex", and I was perplexed by the incident I saw on the highway the other day, so I would make sentences for instance as "I saw the incident on the highway the other day and was very perplexed from it ....", etc. Very simple construction but with the right grammar.
Step 3:
Words come from roots, which comprise many words out of it. Supposedly, you encountered the word hemorrhage. You found out that it is similar to hemorrhoids. You look up its root or derivation in the dictionary and find out that it has the same prefix. Hemo - which is blood that originally came from Greek plus rhoids which came from Greek as well and means "to break". You look at the root of Hemorrhoids and find out that its derivation break from the words hemo-blood plus rhein to flow. This process of rooting out, demonstrate the explanation from where the word came originally, and will help you to ge the basic understanding of the word.
Step 4:
Don't postpone the looking up new words in the dictionary once you encountered them, as that what would make vocabulary growth. You will expand your feelings, thoughts, speaking, reading and writing.
Take pleasure in it.
