First thing you will need to do is buy a basket. Of course the basket doesn't have to be a real basket. A container of almost any kind will work- an office tray, a decorated box, a gift tin. Check out Wal-mart or your local stores for Valentine gift boxes. Use your imagination and you will come up with something.
The container needs to be properly prepared. For instance, lining the inside with colored or printed tissue paper adds a little pretty touch to the project. The number of sheets needed will vary depending on your basket size and shape. If you are using an open faced basket instead of a lidded one, consider leaving a little extra tissue paper sticking up around the edge. This paper can then be used to sort of cover up the inside goodies before giving.
Some items that you might need for finishing up the basket would be strings of beads, confetti or small strings of garland. A sheet of clear plastic or colored Saran Wrap will also be needed for open baskets.
It is important when picking out the goodies for the Diabetic Valentine's Day Basket that the goodies are delicious as well as safe. Despite some common thinking, it is not always safe for a diabetic just because it is low or no sugar. It is a good idea to buy items that are not high in sodium because many diabetics also suffer from high blood pressure.
Unlike the sugar free candy of decades ago, sugar free candy is delicious. Some great items to grab for the Diabetic Valentine's Day Gift Basket are Sugar Free Gummy Bears by Jelly Belly, Pop Rocks Sugar Free Popping Candy, single serving snack pack crackers, and sugar free chewing gum like Stride. There are many online stores that make and sell diabetic candy like lollipops and sugar free chocolates.
If you have a larger basket with plenty of room, you might add an extra item like a stuffed toy or a Valentine's Day card. Other small gifts like flower bouquet pins, gift cards or jewelry can also be used to make your loved one's day.
When you have the basket filled with the goodies, it is time to finish it up. If you have a tin or other lidded container, lay the edges of your tissue paper down on the top of the fillings and close. If it is an open basket, then set the basket down on a sheet of clear or colored Saran Wrap plastic wrap. Pull the plastic up and over and close the gathered plastic with a rubber band. Tie ribbons over the rubber band to decorate. A gift tag can also be tied here.
So now that you know how to make a Diabetic Valentine's Gift Basket for your loved one, be sure to get started before February 14.
