How to Diagnose Car Problems

Fix it Yourself to Save Money

Peggy Hazelwood
Diagnose car problems when the check engine light comes on so you can save yourself money. Try to fix your car yourself because it might be a simple enough fix before resorting to taking it to a repair shop. Sometimes the check engine light comes on for simple reasons like the gas tank cap is not screwed on securely. Try the simple repairs before resorting to the big ticket fixes.

Step 1: Read the codes. If the car's check engine light is on, go to an auto parts store. They can sometimes let you know what the codes mean so you can try some fixes yourself first.

Step 2: Of all of the choices, start with the easiest, cheapest fix first. If the auto parts store guide says to do this, that, and the other, choose the one that is simple and cheap. If that fixes it, great. If not, go to the next item and do that. Often you don't need to rebuild the engine, just change the air filter or something else simpler.

Step 3: Pep up the engine with a bottle of fuel additive. Think of this as vitamins for your car. Give it a boost to help it last longer.

Step 4: If all of the diagnosed areas still don't fix the problem, find a car repair shop that will diagnose your car free or for a minimal charge. Look out for your bottom line.
