How a Diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis is the End of Life as You Know it and the Beginning of a New One
Since that fateful day, I have learned that none of this is true. I live a full life. I travel. I eat out. I enjoy life.
If you have just found out that you have ulcerative colitis, the most important thing for you to do is to be thankful that you have a diagnosis because that means that you can now work toward finding a suitable treatment.
Sure, finding a treatment is usually a long process that involves dietary changes, various medications and many trips to the doctor's office. Keep in mind when you are going through all of this that it is all temporary.
True, your diagnosis is the end of your life as you know it. I say this because once you find a treatment that works for you, your days of constant suffering will be over. Being in remission after suffering from ulcerative colitis for a long time is wonderful.
From this point on, your life will get better. You will certainly have some ups and downs. This is true even when your ulcerative colitis is in remission. Once you find a treatment plan that works for you, those bad days will be few and far between.
I am a firm believer that negative thoughts have negative consequences and positive thoughts have positive results. Because of this, I have held fast to a basic principle of finding the silver lining in the storm clouds of ulcerative colitis. This is sometimes very difficult but once I find that wonderful lining, my day gets better and my symptoms seem to lessen.
Basically, when you are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, it is important to keep an open mind and a positive outlook on even the negative aspects of treatments. It is also important to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about ulcerative colitis and who is supportive. Make sure that you and your doctor have open lines of communication.
Try to find others who have ulcerative colitis in your community. Other people who suffer from ulcerative colitis or any form of gastrointestinal condition are a wonderful form of support and can usually offer you a lot of information.
As far as an open mind goes, you need this because some methods of coping with the symptoms of ulcerative colitis seem odd or far fetched. Sometimes, these suggestions are the most effective.
If you have recently been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, keep your head up and know that better days are right around the corner.
