One of the hottest new gifts for moms-to-be is the Diaper Cake. If you are hosting a baby shower, or attending one, you can be sure that a Diaper Cake will be well received and useful to a new mom, and you can usually count on the fact that no-one else will have thought of such a great idea!

A Diaper cake is exactly what it says, a cake made out of diapers! Usually the cake is three tiers, much like a wedding cake, and you can incorporate some other cool, small gifts within it. Often baby shower hostesses will make a diaper cake to be the focal point of the shower. Make sure you take a camera with you, you will want to capture the surprised look on the mom-to-be's face and the other guests as well.

Supplies for the Diaper Cake

Buying the supplies and making sure you have everything handy before you begin assembling the cake is of paramount importance. As the cake requires quite a few diapers, you may want to look at what is on sale, or buy a generic or no-name brand.

You need about a total of fifty diapers, and leaving some room for margin of error is essential. It is usually best to by a pack of large diapers, a pack of medium sized ones and a small pack of diapers for newborns.

You will also need to buy scotch tape, glue, scissors, tissue paper, a receiving blanket, and some strong cardboard for the base of the cake. If you plan on including little gifts, don't buy ones that are too heavy and will weigh the diaper cake down. A good suggestion is to buy rattles, and small sampler bottles of baby shampoo, talcum powder, and some baby socks are a nice touch. You also need something for the very top of the cake; a small sized teddy bear is often a nice touch.

Assembling the Diaper Cake

Once you have all your supplies, leave yourself at least two hours to assemble the cake. Begin my cutting a circle of cardboard for the base; a pizza pan can give you an outline for this.

Next take the large diapers about thirty in total, and roll them into cylinders. Using a small bit of scotch tape to help them keep their shape is essential. Next do the same with about fifteen medium sized diapers for the second tier, and six small diapers for the top tier.

Tape the receiving blanket to the card board and then begin attaching the first tier of diapers. You will need a dab of glue, to hold the diapers down at one end, but don't use too much or they will tear when mom disassembles the cake.

Follow the same process with the medium sized diapers for the second tier, and attach the bottom of these diapers to the top of the diapers on the bottom tier with the aid of a little tape. Follow the same process for the small diapers used for the top tier, and attach the teddy bear on top.

Once you have the cake assembled its time to decorate it a little. Add colored tissue papers between the layers of diapers, and attach a few balloons to the base to lend a creative touch to your diaper cake. Then add the little sampler bottles of baby shampoo, and powder by affixing them with tape at different levels of the cake. The result is awesome it almost looks like a mini Christmas tree.

A diaper cake is sure to be well received at any baby shower. You may wish to enter into this project with a mutual friend, or have friends buy gift certificates for the new mom, and tape them on to the cake.

Remember when assembling the cake, don't use too much glue or scotch tape, or it will be very difficult to disassemble, and you want the mom to be to be able to use those diapers!
