How Did Amy Winehouse Die?

Shannon Wilson

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home on July 23, 2011. The ambulance service in London pronounced her dead at 3:54 PM. It was no secret that Amy had a problem with drugs and alcohol but it is still shocking to her fans to find out that she died. She was only 27 years old.

Should her death be such a shock though? Her history with drugs and alcohol was famous and often used as a joke source for comedians. Amy lived a hard life of drugs and music and unfortunately was unable to handle the pressure of just saying no. Amy Winehouse was a Grammy award winning artist, snagging five awards in 2008 and she made it no secret that she thought she did some of her best creative work while under the influence.

The big question right now is how did Amy Winehouse die? Unfortunately there are no concrete answers right now; everything is being kept quiet until the appropriate tests can be done by the authorities and the coroner. The police are being mum and her death is being described as "unexplained." The Metropolitan Police in London did release the following statement "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained"

UPDATE: Amy Winehouse may have been dead for up to four hours before she was found. Police did not find any drug related items at the scene and still can't give a cause of death as they are waiting for the toxicology report. That can take up to four weeks to get back.

Amy's mother, Janis, even thought that her daughter would die before her time. In 2008 she spoke about her daughter in an interview and appeared to be very, very concerned. One of her comments was "'I've already come to terms with her dead. I've steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because the drugs will get her if she stays on this road." Even though Amy's mom tried to prepare herself years ago, I'm thinking it will still hit her family pretty hard. How can you truly prepare for the death of someone you really love?

Amy was currently working on a new album. Her last album came out in 2006, sold millions and was called "Back to Black." It is just such a tragic waste of life. If anything good can come out of her death, hopefully it will make others who are addicted to drugs realize that drugs shouldn't rule your life. Do what it takes, go to rehab over and over again and make the most out of your life. Don't let the drugs win.

Rest in peace Amy -- your struggles are over. Her funeral was held on July 27th.
