How Did Chicago Get Named the Windy City?

Chicago, the Windy city uses its name to keep people coming back for more! There are so many theories as to how Chicago became dubbed the windy city. From long winded politician speeches to brisk, sharp lake front breezes. I have my own take on why so many people find their hearts are drawn to this big city.

Scientifically, the majority of the wind comes from blustery Lake Michigan that cuddles Chicago on the east side. Very understandably, this is the best reason why it's so windy.

But, my theory digs deeper and I think there are many reasons why Chicago is dubbed the windy city.

The buildings are so tall that its like a metropolis within itself and compared to the air around the city, it's small. When the wind comes trustling in, it creates a whirlwind down below in the city streets. This is why you feel the blustering breezes as you walk across the avenues and out in the open away from the skyscrapers.

I think businesses thrive in Chicago due to it being windy. They have some of the world's most renowned stores -- all on the Magnificent mile and for good reason. When people are walking along Michigan Avenue and it's cold, with the wind blowing outside, they pop in and out of the stores to get warmed up again. This is a good reason to leave the store with full shopping bags.

My last trip to Chicago in February was fabulous, but the temps hovered around 2 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit, with the wind chills holding steady at around 10 to 14 below zero. It was cold! When my husband and I walked out to do some sight-seeing we didn't get too far. Bopping in and out of stores was a way to keep our body temperature up so we could get from point A to point B. It got so frigid and windy at one point we bailed into a restaurant, (a very fancy one at that) and ended up spending $85.00 for lunch! The food was great by the way, and I got warmed up enough to venture back out and do some shopping.

Chicago is famous for its pizza and why not? The pizza joints are warm and spice up your taste buds and your tummy to make you forget about venturing back out right away into the cold breezy streets.

Coffee shops are like no other in Chicago. They thrive off of the wind so that people can come in and warm up and relax a bit. In downtown Chicago there is a coffee shop on just about every block corner.

From food to shopping, the city of Chicago itself holds the key as to why its so windy there. Maybe all we need to know is that we keep coming back and we cant help falling in love with everything the city has to offer!
