How Did a Toddler Manage to Break in a Texas Store After Midnight?

Mary E. Coe
Early Monday morning, Dec. 15, 2008; approximately 3 a. m.; Texas police found a toddler who appeared to be 2 or 3 years old in Beaumont Family Dollar Store playing with toys.

It is still a mystery how the toddler got out of his house and crossed a busy street to get to the Beaumont Family Dollar Store.

Early Monday morning, the toddler crossed the street and went to the store. The surveillance video showed the child attempting to open one door; it was locked, so, the toddler tried a second door, which was unlocked; the toddler went inside triggering a silent alarm.

Police responded to the burglar alarm to find a toddler in the store, when the police arrived, the surveillance video showed the toddler meeting them at the door and led them inside; the child showed the officers some of the cool toys.

Later that day, the toddler was turned over to his parent who was searching the child.

I have no idea as to why the front door to that store was left unlocked. Your guess is as good as mine.

You last statement about why the door was left unlocked was one that intrigued me as well. My feeling is that it was definitely a God-thing. What else would explain why the door was left open on exactly the same night as a child decided to leave his house and cross a busy street. I'm sure there were also angels that kept the child from being hit-perhaps minor delays (couldn't find their key/a co-worker who wanted to chat- etc) that caused people driving the cars to to be just a few seconds later so the road would be clear when the child crossed. Who knows what would/could have happened to the child if, instead of finding a door unlocked and the allure of such wonderful toys to keep him occupied, he had found two locked doors and decided to continue on down the road.
I enjoy your articles and pray that you and family have a great year in 2009. Thanks for your support during the year.

Children are full of surprises, I bet a toddler was the last thing the officers expected to find. Scary and humorous at the same time.

Thanks Mary. This type of story always ticklles me at the ingenuity of a child.
