Join the PTA. It is a great way to help the school and get to know everyone.
Become a room mom/parent. This is so much fun. You need good organizational skills and a love of the kids.
Lunchroom volunteer. At our elementary school we have 2 parents who come in every day and do little things like open milk, ketchup, get the utensils the kids forgot to pick up. It saves the teacher lots of steps and they are able to eat their own lunch. And the lunch staff is able to concentrate on feeding the kids and keeping the cafeteria clean.
Reading support. Kindergarten and first grades always need parents to read to kids and also let the kids read to them.
Activities volunteer. At our school we a family fun day, field day, walk to school day and other fun days that parents can help out.
Building and grounds. We have a group of parents that volunteer their time to pick up trash (some are senior citizens from the nearby neighborhood who take their walks through school grounds), build outdoor structures needed and apply fresh mulch each year to the playgrounds
Library helpers. This group helps the kids find books, check out books and helps the library staff stay on top of putting books away.
First aid clinic. Many schools cannot afford a full time nurse. In our case the nurse is shared with the middle school and is reserved for serious health problems. We have a clinic that is certified in CPR and first aid to handle the basic and most common problems like skinned knees, nose bleeds, and tummy issues.
Help with fund raisers. I know we all dread them but the funds really do help the schools buy computers and much more.
Safety Patrol. This is a group of parents that work side by side with the fifth grade safety patrol at our school. The parents handle traffic flow while the fifth graders help students safely to and from their cars. And lots of the above volunteer opportunities also include some student volunteers. Check with your school to see where you can volunteer.
The kids so love to see parents there helping out! And as a result of the volunteering I have done, everyone knows who my kids are. The staff in many areas watch out for them at all times. And the biggest impact is the kids. They look forward to seeing me around school as much as I enjoy being there.
Make a difference in the life of a child today!
