How to Use Your Digital Camera when You Are the Victim of a Hit and Run Accident

Perhaps Due to the Economy, the Number of Hit and Run Accidents is Increasing

Malina Debrie
Today my son was involved in a hit and run accident. Thank God he was not injured, but you never know. In this case, he was hit from behind by what appeared to be a drunk driver. The man hit him and took off. While my first thought was to question if my child was alright, the next question was did he get the tag number for the car. My son said he did not have time before the guy raced off. There also was no one else around who saw the accident and was able to get any other information except for a description of the driver.

After thinking of the situation and what could have been done to assist in apprehending a hit and run driver, i thought about the fact that my son always carries his digital camera with him. the camera feature on the cell phone is always an option however, having the digital camera available at all times is something that can come in quite handy in the event of an emergency such as this. The next time you are driving around and before you know it, you become the victim of an accident b it hit and run or where both drivers are honest people, take out your digital camera a take a few pictures.

Take a Picture of the Tag

You never know when a driver is going to try and run or do something stupid like blame you for an accident that is clearly their fault. So take a picture of the tag before doing anything else. Even when the driver is racing off, a digital camera can be used to capture the information and with zooming ability, the tag number can be read with no problem. Also, people are desperate and more creative than ever today. They will try anything to get out of or avoid paying for something. When you have been hit by another driver, take a picture of the tag. Some industrious person may try a switch on you. You may have one tag reported yet when the car is found, there may be another tag displayed.

Take a Picture of The Vehicle

It's important to always know of be able to provide details of an accident. Even when the accident has been reported, you might have to move your vehicles before the officer arrives. If this is the case, at the least you have a picture of the angles of each vehicle involved and where they were at the time the accident occurred. The difference in determination of fault can be based on a few feet of distance. With the picture available, and your explanation, the determination should be obvious and if not, the picture is there for proof.

Take a picture of the driver getting out of the vehicle and if possible coming towards you. It's a good idea to have a picture of the driver as they are getting out of the vehicle. amazing what people will say to avoid being charged with an accident. Television while stretching the truth at times can make you more aware of the need to be on your P's and Q's at all time. Get the upper hand and have a picture of the driver just in case.

You know, if my son had been able to think quickly enough, he could have gotten a picture of the tag while the driver was driving off. Being that this was his first accident, he was more upset with the fact that his car had been hit than with obtaining information. Then, he could not believe that the other driver just drove off. Experience is the best teacher. In the future, he will have this experience to fall back on and hopefully, he will be ready with a camera if the driver decides to run!

Glad your son is okay. This is a great idea. Unfortunately, many of us won't have the presence of mind to get out the camera when we have just been hit by another car.
