How to Disable Dialing Sounds from a Dial-up Modem

A Step-by-Step Tutorial on Silencing the Irritating Dial-up Modem Sounds

If you have used dial-up or, heavens forbid, still use dial-up, you recognize the distinctive modem squeal as it dials to a remote server. Beep beep beep...beep beep beep beep beep beep beep...beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep...Eueueueuu uuuu uuuuuu uuuuu...click click click. This noise can get very annoying and irritating, especially if you disconnect and reconnect frequently. Fortunately, there are methods by which to disable these aggravating noises.

Here are two alternate methods by which you may disable dialing sounds from a modem.

Step #1
First, you need to access your modem settings. Click Start and locate the Control Panel on the menu.

Step #2
On the Control Panel menu, locate the Phone and Modem Options icon. Double click this icon and click the Modem tab.
There should be list of modems connected to your computer. Click on the dial-up modem that you use to connect to the Internet.

Step #3
Click the Properties button located near the bottom of the window. On the new window that appears, click the Modem tab.

Step #4
You will find an option labeled Speaker Volume. Click the knob and scroll it all the way to the left to disable the modem's speaker.

Step #5
Press OK on this window and click OK on the Phone and Modem Options window to close out. The modem's volume, will now be disabled.

If, for some reason, you can still hear your modem when it dials up, there is another way to disable the modem's volume.

Step #1
Once again, click Start and locate the Control Panel on the menu.

Step #2
Double click the Phone and Modem Options icon. Click the Modem tab.

Step #3
There should be list of modems connected to your computer. Click on the dial-up modem that you use to connect to the Internet.

Step #4
You then need to click the Properties button located near the bottom of the window. On the new window that appears, click the Advanced tab.

Step #5
You will find a text field labeled Extra initialization commands. Type in the desired code, according to these codes below.

CODE DESCRIPTION
ATM0 for no sound
ATM1 if you want the sound on until the modem detects a remote carrier
ATM2 if you want the sound to always be on even after you connect.
ATM3 if you want the sound no Dialing sounds, but want the speaker to make noise until it connects.

Step #6
Press OK when you have entered the desired code. Your modem should now be muted.
