How to Get Discounted Student Airline Tickets

The Hines Group
Many airlines offer a discount to students on their airfares, which many students take advantage of to fly back to visit family or for spring break vacations. These discounted tickets aren't without strings attached. These student airline tickets may come with preconditions such as being placed on the waiting list. Once the student is placed on the waiting list, even after paying for the ticket they must wait at the airport in hopes of there still being an opening by the time the flight takes off.

The discount is excellent for students who are on budget and are not in rush to get to there destination. With these discounted tickets, the passenger may have to wait for several flights before the board, due to their placement on the waiting list. Once boarded, they might have to connect with several different flights before they reach their final destination. If the student seeking the discount is pressed for time, they can check with other airlines that may offer them a student discount without requiring them to be placed on the waiting list. If all else fails, they can still purchase a coach ticket. Although, prices for the student discounted tickets to the price of a coach ticket still may have a big difference. Most students would prefer to save the money in lieu of the minor time inconvenience. For students making trips home for holidays, having to wait a couple hours is worth being with their family for the week. Or students planning to go to Cancun for a summer vacation would like to save money where they can so they have more to spend at the destination.

This is not to say students should just sign up for the discounted fares blindly, it's highly advised to read all of the rules and stipulations that go along with the ticket. As mentioned before, sometimes airlines require you to be placed on a waiting list. Or the price showed may be under the condition of traveling to a certain region of the United States, and more often the not these tickets will not allow for international travel. Recently, airlines have been offering "web-only" ticket prices, which require you to book your flight using the airlines website. The conditions required to purchase a discounted ticket can go on forever, there may be a limited on your luggage, you may be required to a travel a certain time of year, and the possibilities are endless. So please the read the fine print. But overall, if the terms are agreeable it can be very beneficial to purchase tickets as a student.
