Several months ago, I decided that I need a pet. As a single twenty something woman living alone, I needed some companionship, and I decided to find this in a pet. I was faced with a dilemma, though. Dogs have always been my favorite pets, but I work very long hours and am unable to care for a dog properly.
So I thought, "How about a cat?" But, I have never really liked cats. I don't like how cats act so independent, as if they do not need people. I have always thought that they seemed rather antisocial and snobbish. Then, a friend suggested that perhaps I had not yet encountered the right sort of cat.
Intrigued by his suggestion, I went online and began researching various cat breeds. It wasn't long until I stumbled upon a website about Ragdoll cats. I had never heard of these cats before, so I read on. This website, (see link at end of article), describes Ragdoll cats as gentle, docile, and loving. They are sometimes described as "man's best companions". This was exactly what I was looking for.
Facts about Ragdolls
One of the largest of cat breeds; Ragdolls are long haired cats with bushy tails. Their light colored bodies are contrasted by their Siamese style "points" on their faces, ears, legs, and tails. All true Ragdolls have gorgeous bright blue eyes. Despite the fact that they have long hair, they require minimal grooming and do not shed much at all. They are calm and affectionate, and very intelligent. One caveat about Ragdolls is that as they are so friendly, they do not defend themselves and must be kept indoors.
My Ragdolls
After reading about the Ragdolls and seeing many pictures of them, I was sold. So my search turned to finding a breeder. I purchased two kittens, a brother and sister from the same litter, from Royal dolls Ragdolls. I brought them home, and named them Simba and Nala. It wasn't long before I fell in love with these two cats. They are more playful and affectionate than any cat I have ever known.
They fetch, they greet me at the door. They sleep in bed with me. They even pose for pictures! They are very content and are happy to socialize with all of my friends and visitors.
It was initially hard for me to believe that cats could be so friendly, but indeed it is possible. Simba and Nala sometimes remind me more of dogs than cats! Ragdolls are sort of the best of both worlds: a friendly animal like a dog that can be your best friend, as well as a litter trained cat that doesn't need to be walked! So for those of you out there who think that you don't like cats, perhaps you can take my friend's advice like I did and realize that, "Perhaps you have just not yet encountered the right sort of cat."
