How to Dispute Information in Your Chexsystems File

Kristine Brite
If you've found this article, you're probably all too aware of what the Chexsystems is. You can't open a banking account, and have a lingering bad credit mark stamped all over your personal record.

For those not aware, banks report negative information such as bad checks, overdrafts, and other information to Chexsystems. Other banks check that system before extending credit. Often, the information found in Chex is false. You also have to right to ask for Chexsystems to verify anything found in your account.

Once you learn you're in the Chexsystem, stop trying to open accounts other places. This could flag your account, every time you apply for an account, Chexsystems keeps a record. Next, go to www.consumerdebit.com to order a free Chexsystems report. You are entitled to a free report if you've been denied credit. Thourghly look through the report and make sure everything appears correct, including name, address, date reported, and the problem reported. If you have questions about anything, or just wish for verification, draft a letter to Chexsystems similar to the one below and fax to 602-659-2197.

RE: Consumer ID # 00000000

To whom it may concern:

I have recently learned that there is negative information reported by (insert your bank) in the file Chexsystems keeps under my Social Security number. After ordering a copy of the report, I found an entry from this institution listing (problem listed after getting Chex system report) in (date).

I am unaware of ever having an (listed problem) from this bank.

Please validate this information with (the bank or institution) and forward me copies of any documentation related with the (problem) with my signature. In the absence of any such documentation bearing my signature, I ask that this information be deleted from the file you maintain under my social security number immediately. This report is persistently, if not absolutely, limiting my banking abilities.

Sincerely,
