How Does Brett Favre Rank?

Shaun O'Brien
An era ended today as Brett Favre retired from the NFL after 17 fantastic seasons. His legacy will live on forever not only in Packers' lure, but throughout the NFL. From now until the end of time, Favre will be compared against some of the elite Quarerbacks the NFL has ever seen. I have compiled a list of 5 Quarterbacks that match up to Favre. Before we see just how Favre compares to these greats, lets look at Favre's career stats:

Brett Favre:
17 Years
Drafted in the 2nd round of the 1991 Draft
61,665 Yards(NFL Record)
442 TD's(NFL Record)
9 Pro-Bowl selections
3 MVP titles
2 Super Bowl Appearances
1 Super Bowl Victory

1. Joe Montana
15 Years
Drafted in the 3rd Round of the 1979 Draft
40,551 Yards
273 TD's
8 Pro-Bowl Selections
2 MVP titles
4 Super Bowl Appearances/Titles
3 Super Bowl MVP's

2. Terry Bradshaw
13 Years
Drafted First Round(First Overall) in 1970
27,989 Yards
212 TD's
3 Pro Bowl Selections
4 Super Bowl Championships
2 Super Bowl MVP's

3. Troy Aikman
11 Years
Drafted in the First Round(first overall) in the 1989 Draft
32,949 Yards
165 TD's
6 Pro Bowl Selections
3 Super Bowl Championships
3 Super Bowl MVP's

4. John Elway
15 Years
Drafted first overall in the 1983 Draft
51,475 Yards
300 TD's
9 Pro Bowl Selections
1 MVP
5 Super Bowl Apperances
2 Super Bowl Championships

5. Tom Brady
6 Years(Still Active)
Drafted in the 6th round of the 2000 draft
26,370 Yards
197 TD's
4 Pro Bowl Selections
4 Super Bowl Appearances
3 Super Bowl Titles

When you look at these stats, Favre stands out dramatically. As mentioned, he's the NFL record holder for yards as well as touchdowns. Number 5 on my list, Brady is the only active player, and does still stand a chance at possibly catching Favre, but it is highly unlikely. Favre may not have won as many Super Bowls as any of the 5, but his longevity speaks volumes. He played the longest of all of them. And while Montana, and Brady may have led their teams to more Super Bowls, and Elway and Aikman and Bradshaw were all drafted higher than Favre in their respective drafts, Brett Favre can hang with the best of them. When it's all said and done, Favre will most likely be in the middle of this group, probably 2nd or 3rd all-time, but there is no doubt in my mind that when it comes to mentioning the best Quarterbacks the NFL has ever seen, you can't have this conversation without mentioning Brett Favre.
