How Does an Infrared Grill Work?

Scott Kessman

The infrared grill is based upon transforming natural gas into infrared heat. This heat then provides a high enough temperature to cook food directly in a very short space of time and more effective than the traditional type of barbecue which has a lower intensity of heat even with the lid closed. Consequently, many restaurants prefer this type of appliance particularly for steaks as this type of meat can be perfected to suit everyone's taste. So it is a necessity for every professional chef.

An infrared grill uses a ceramic top as the cooking surface which comprises of an infrared element beneath as opposed to the more conventional gas grill which uses a direct flame to cook any food. This difference is the intensity of heat produced as an element is more intense than a gas flame.

Since the demand for this type of grill is ever increasing many manufacturers include such an infrared facility with the traditional gas grill. This then provides an added feature to cover the required way of cooking that so many people seek.

The many benefits of an infrared grill far outweigh the traditional type of gas grill. For many having a cooking facility which distributes the heat evenly is an advantage as it ensures that any food is cooked thoroughly and evenly. Another major benefit is the minimal amount of time for ignition to begin the cooking process which means that hardly any waiting is needed. This, together with the high temperature that this type of grill can reach, enables food and meals to be prepared in a relatively short period of time. Furthermore, the cost effectiveness is also reduced due to the element of time required for producing a meal. In addition, cleaning this type of grill is easily carried out as the grease residue filters into the cooking grate and burns out leaving minimal remains.

Cooking food on an infrared grill allows the products to retain their moisture and juices as the cooking vapors released contribute to the searing of any meat. Consequently any meats cooked in this way will complement the overall taste.
