How Does Music Affect Emotions?

Michael Holt
Have you ever listened to the music in horror movies? What about the music in inspirational or Disney movies? What kind of music do you listen to when your sad? What kind of music do you listen to when you're happy? Since we are all human beings we all experience joy, anger, sadness and other feelings like those. We all have a ton of emotions that control how we act and what we say. Our emotions are triggered by many things. One of those things is Music.

Music has the ability to change the emotional and physical status of people, whether they are in bad moods, good moods, or sad moods. Music can also make people feel suspense or excitement during a movie. I have first hand experience with having music change my mind set and having music make me feel better about things. I have also done research on this subject. Everyone in this room has had music affect them in some way. Whether it be through a movie or thought a CD. Over the next 6 minutes I will touch on the different ways that music changes peoples moods; How music can make your emotions change and how music makes movies suspenseful or inspiring. The music in movies is so much more than just drums or guitars. It has a specific meaning to the movie.

When is the last time you actually listened to the music in a horror movie or an inspiring movie? The movie is nothing without the music in it. According to the book Brain Research, music is an intriguing stimulus widely used in movies to increase the emotional experience. You might be thinking what does that mean? Well think about when you watching a horror movie and the killer is about to find his next victim. What type of music do you think is playing? The type that is playing is music that will draw the suspense from you. For example, instruments like woodwinds or strings can make a scene feel very horrifying just by the sound of the music.

The music in an inspiring movie such as Remember the Titans is very upbeat during the happy moments and very dim and dark during the sad moments. Without music you would not get that feeling of happiness or that feeling of sadness. The music brings these emotions out. Also in Disney movies like the Lion King, the music makes the movie what it is. The music brings a sense of happiness to everyone when they watch it.

Listening to your favorite music can make a person feel great and can make there moods change.
The specific song you are listening to can affect how you feel. Different types of music may make you cry, laugh, or even feel anger.
According to the Psychology Press Music is a complex acoustic and temporal structure that induces a large variety of emotional responses in listeners.
The nature of emotions created by music has been a matter of much debate. Preliminary practical investigations have demonstrated that basic emotions, such as happiness, anger, fear, and sadness, can be recognized in and created by musical stimuli in humans.
I know from experience that when I am in a bad mood, I'll listen to my favorite CD. I don't know what it is about the music but it just makes me feel better almost instantly. All of you have that CD or song that make you feel great when you're feeling down. Music has that power and none of us realize that until we really think about it. The physical affects that music has on us is almost the same as the emotional ones.

Music can alter you in many ways, depending on the genre of music you are being exposed to. According to "Music and Emotions", Electronic music with amplified sounds that stresses such musical parts as brass, percussion and heavy bass notes will physically affect you more easily than any other type of music. Certain types of music can give you courage and strengthen your willpower, while other types can relax your nerves and muscles and relieve tension. I can think of a good example for music bringing willpower and strength to you, when you are getting ready before a sport. The sport I play is football and I know that if I don't listen to a certain mix of songs, my head is all over the place. If I listen to the specific songs I become very energized and feel better about things. Perkiness is the key to energizing music. Happy rhythms and brass sounds have the highest capability of recharging and energizing your body. Music affects your emotions in many ways. It also affects you physical status. Music also is the key to your enjoying of a movie. Music affects your emotions by being able to change your state of mind from a sad mood to at happy, upbeat mood. It can also make a person feel great before a competition. Music is also the key to Movies. Without music in movies there would be no suspense, no horror and no excitement. It makes movies what they are to us. In closing, Music is basically the key to life. When you think about it, it can change your mind set and make you happy and it can make you energized when your tired. Then it hits on the Entertainment side of life and it makes movies great. Without music there would not be life, well as I see it. There would be dullness and boring. I hope this speech made you think about how music affects your life.
