How Does Online File Storage Work? And is it Worth Using?

John Galt
Once, there were devices known as floppy disks. These 3.5" square disks allowed us to save and rewrite data on them. However, as time went on, many became dissatisfied with the floppies slow speed and limited storage. Today, we have devices which are known as "USB Disks" or perhaps "flashdrives". These enter the USB port on your computer and allow one to save and retrieve data. However, while these devices have become more and more common, they are not perfect for everyone.

In fact, there are still a variety of problems that can be associated with the disks. Namely, they still have limited file space, and depending on the computer being used, the time to retrieve and open the data can be somewhat slow. Not to mention, if the disk is lost, whoever finds it can acess all of the information present on it. However, recently, a new trend has emerged, that puts together the best features of the USB disk and strives to eliminate some of the weaknesses. This trend is known as oline file storage, and while it may not revolutionary it is a convenient way to gain some additional storage space without having some of the worries of a USB disk.

The idea behind online file storage is actually a simple one. A company or website will allow you to use their servers to store your data, and you will be able to access through by entering your username and password. Basically, you pay (or receive advertising) to save your data and files on someone else's space. Generally, the website which is providing the service offers up to 1GB of storage or so for free. However, if one wishes to store more data, or would like to download and upload at faster speeds, there is generally a premium service that can be purchased for a certain amount of money per month.

At first, this idea may seem a bit strange, but in practice it actually works fairly well. One can acess their data from any computer connected to the internet, without having to carry anything around or have the fear of losing their data. Of course, some might worry about the security of storing something like personal data in an online database.

However, most databases use complex security measures to make sure that your information is safe and protected. However, as might seem an obvious drawback, unless you are using a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, the amount of time it takes to either upload the said file, or download for use in the remote location is going to be extreme. This is especially true if one is talking about uploading a PowerPoint or other file that has a lot of space.

It is very easy to find a trusted online database, and by going to Download.com or a related site, it is possible to find some which actually download to your desktop for increased speed and security.

While online file storage may not be the next great thing in technology, it definitely does serve a purpose, one just has to be intelligent when using it. The ability to store our files and data online has a purpose, and it can serve as an excellent back up in case something should go wrong with a USB disk or if it should become lost. However, all in all, the USB disk is faster, more universal, offers more space, and at the ever lowering prices of the device, it is easy to get a 1 or 2 GB drive for under $30.

By the time that one pays for premium service plans on a month to month basis, the USB disk is comparatively much cheaper. Those curious about online file storage are encouraged to try it out, but it is not recommended that you throw away your USB drive, just remember to judge online file storage the same as anything else, a relatively new idea that needs some refinement and advancement before it becomes truly useful.

  • Fast, depending on computer
  • Limited space
  • Requires monthly payments (generally) for more space
The dropping price of USB disks means that they are probably the better option when it comes to transporting saved data.
