How Does Video Conferencing Work?

Keith Dailey
There is often quite a bit of resistance to any kind of change within an organization, but those especially who have been with the company for a while may like things the way they are and be very resistant to new ideas. There is often the fear by some individuals that they will not be able to appropriately learn and utilize the new technology. Keeping up with the times is essential for keeping a business successful; therefore, when the question of "How does video conferencing work?" comes up you should have a plan of action to present it.

There is really no way to explain what video conferencing is without first educating them in how video conferencing works. Video conferencing basically entails video and voice communication technology that allows people to connect with others that are in different areas. The people wanting to communicate then do not have to be in the same room, same building, or even the same country. This technology breaks the communication barriers by allowing real time sight and sound during conversation. Real time basically means that there is not much of a delay in the conversation exchange, making it more of a free flowing communication.

A high memory computer, high-speed broadband internet connection, microphone and a web can are the tools needed by each individual or group in order to carry out a video conference properly. A simple video conference can be carried out with these equipment items, but there is a bit more video conferencing equipment needed for more advanced business set-ups. Such additional equipment would include items such as wall mounts for the video and table top microphones. This allows an entire group to have the capability of being seen and heard throughout the video conference. In order avoid complications there are advanced systems for video conferencing available, as well as services for video conferences.

Free flowing conversations can more readily occur with the use of a good bandwidth in video conferencing. This is a big improvement over voice only technology. Video and voice streaming can flow smoothly during video conferencing with a good bandwidth.

There are different kinds of video conference from which to choose. The more basic and common kind of video conferencing used globally is that of point-to-point video conferencing. The point-to-point kind of conferencing only has the capability for connection of two personal computers, and is a type of video phone.

Another kind of video conferencing is that of "multi-point" conferencing. This kind of video conferencing then comes with a few variations. The multi-point system allows the capability for three or more users with the use of the multipoint bridge, which is a multipoint connector unit (MCU) and reflector. With the multi-point system personal computers can be equipped with room systems or roll about systems. Users are connected through a central hub that can be used as a computer server or a stand-alone.

If you are somewhat knowledgeable of technical terms, video conferencing is developed and the status is guided by the "IEEE" standard. Using an Internet (TCP/IP or IP only) video conferencing operates by the H.323 guide. The ISDN telephone circuit is operated and the process is dictated by the H.320 guide.

There is a lot to computer technology to begin with, so adding the video conferencing technology may overwhelm some. Some people will not be willing to even listen and attempt to learn the process, and you probably already know which ones they are within your organization. Learning how video conferencing works can be a major undertaking, but will be a good investment for the progress of any company.
