How to Download Flash Videos and Movies from YouTube

Store YouTube Videos on Your Hard Drive

Everybody loves YouTube. If you want to watch a clip from a tv show, hear a song, or learn about something, chances are YouTube has a video for you.

If only you could save those videos on your hard drive. Maybe you want to store them locally, in case your internet connection dies. Maybe you want to embed the video into a Power Point presentation.

Maybe, like me, you want to play YouTube videos for students at your school, but you can't actually access the YouTube site from your school computer.

It used to be near impossible to download videos from YouTube and store them on your hard drive. Some websites exist that will leech the file for you, convert it to another video format, and let you download it. Yet these are slow and often plagued with too many advertisements - not to mention the possibility of spyware and malware.

Well now there is a much easier way to download videos from YouTube.

How to Download YouTube Videos - Use RealPlayer

The key is to download and use the free application RealPlayer.

You may remember RealPlayer from the early days of streaming video on the Internet. It was an application and browser plug-in necessary for playing video files saved in the *.rm format. These days, *.rm is going by the wayside and the flash video (*.flv) is the new standard.

RealPlayer re-invented itself with a great new feature. It plugs into your browser and any time you load a flash video, RealPlayer gives you an option to download that video to your hard drive.

To test it out, start by installing RealPlayer. Then load up YouTube. Find a video that you like. When you place the mouse over the video player, a small button should appear at the top that lets you download the video. You could also right click on the video and choose the download option there.

The videos are downloaded and stored in your Documents folder. You can then play them back any time you want in Real Player (or another program that plays flash movies, like
