Enter the DVD ripper. DVD ripping originated as a way to keep backup copies of legally owned movies and the market has grown to include those wanting to convert their existing DVD movies into formats compatible with their mobile devices.
While there are a wide range of solutions available users may not wish to spend money on a commercial program after investing the money to purchase the DVD. Fortunately there is an assortment of free solutions available.
Free DVD Ripper is designed by GoBuySoftware.com and hosted on BrotherSoft. The program actually has an incredibly low set of system requirements:
Operating System: Windows 2003, XP, 2000 and higher
Processor: 750 MHz or faster
Memory: 128 MB RAM
Hard Drive: 10 MB Hard drive space for the installation (this does not include storage for the ripped videos)
NOTE: The official requirements page indicates that this program works with Windows 2003, XP and Windows 2000. I have personally used this program in both Windows Vista and 7 without any issues so I have added them to the operating system requirements section.
This particular program will rip your DVD videos into four formats: AVI, Video CD (MPEG 1), Super Video CD (MPEG 2) and MPEG 4, allowing your DVD movies to play on a wide range of devices.
DVD ripping laws vary by area: verify your local laws before ripping any files to your computer. Also, only use ripping software on media that you own the rights to use.
Step One:
Open Internet Explorer and visit the Free DVD Ripper page by clicking on this link.
Step Two:
Scroll about halfway down the page to locate the screenshot of the program and click the red "Download Now" link. There are a lot of ads on this page with generic "Download" hyperlinks--look at the photograph with this article to make sure you get the correct link. The section will say "Free DVD Ripper 2.5 Screenshot."
Step Three:
Select a mirror and click the appropriate "Click to Download" link. Mirrors are computers that are hosting a copy of the file--if you are uncertain of which one is close to you just pick the top one. If one link doesn't work, just try another one.
Step Four:
Click the "Run" button on the File Security Warning window that appears.
Step Five:
Click the "Run" button on the next security warning that appears.
Step Six:
Click "Yes" on the User Account Control window that appears.
Step Seven:
Remove the check mark inside the box labeled "Install the Brothersoft Extreme Toolbar" and click the "Next" button.
Step Eight:
Click "Yes" on the User Account Control Window that appears asking you if FreeDVD Ripper can make changes to your computer.
Step Nine:
Click the "Next" button on the Free DVD Ripper Setup Wizard window.
Step Ten:
Click "Next" to accept the default folder location.
Step Eleven:
Click the "Next" button this time to accept the shortcut defaults.
Step Twelve:
Click the "Install" button to begin the installation process.
Step Thirteen:
Click the "Finish" button to close the installation wizard and launch the program.
Step Fourteen:
Enjoy converting your favorite videos!
