How to Download Using Torrents

Jason Kohl
This tutorial is about how to download using torrents. Torrents are the new media in which people are downloading files. There are two main components to downloading files through torrents.

1. Client

2. Tracker

The first requirement is to have a client. There are various clients that a person can use. I personally use utorrent. This client has a great user interface as well as a web gui that a person can use to manage their torrents while not at home. There are other various clients that you can use all of which is mainly preference. If you don't want to use a client there is a web-based service called bitlet which will allow you to upload it to their website and a web-based client will launch.

The requirement is to have a tracker. There are numerous trackers out there. Some of the more popular ones are "The Pirate Bay", BTjunkie, torrentreactor, mininova, ISO Hunt, and many others. These websites basically keep track of court files that people have uploaded to their site. What these torrent files do is connect the different computers so that they can all share the same files. For example, computer A has a particular file, computer B and computer C want that file. In the beginning computer B and computer C will connect to computer A and start downloading pieces. Computer B and computer C will download different pieces from computer A. Eventually computer B will start to download from computer C and computer C will start to download from computer B. If a computer D where to begin downloading the same file using that torrent it would get pieces from computer A, B and C until it had the whole file.

So to download a torrent you must install a client. Download a torrent file from one of the trackers and open it using the client.
