Dr. Seuss was very important to many children's first reading experiences. When I was young my parents read to me all the time, I loved reading Dr. Seuss books. Now that I have grown up I still love to read. I think when you read to young children you encourage them to love reading. Dr. Seuss books are perfect for really young children that can't yet read, they are also entertaining enough for the beginning readers.
I have two young daughters and I love to read to them. My daughters love me to read them any books, but Dr. Seuss books always have a good way of catching their attention. Its really special to me because I saved a lot of my Dr. Seuss books from when I was young, and I have given them to my daughters now. Its really special for me that I can read to my daughters from the exact book that I read as a young child.
Dr. Seuss books are great for young readers because of his use of rhyme. Rhyme helps young kids learn the basic skills that children need to be successful readers, and to encourage their love of reading. Because of the rhyming in Dr. Seuss books it also makes them perfect for young children, because rhyme captures their attention and interest. Even really small children will pay attention as their mom or dad reads them the rhyming words of a Dr. Seuss book.
Another great part about Dr. Seuss books is the illustrations. As a child I always loved looking at the pictures in the books and imagining all kinds of things about all the crazy characters. Now my children will spend hours just looking at the pictures in Dr. Seuss books. My two year old daughter will spend such a long time looking and "reading" Dr. Seuss books. The illustrations in Dr. Seuss books really make the characters like the Who's and the Cat and the hat come to life.
Reading books to kids is so important because it encourages their love of learning and their love of reading. I know the reason that I love to read, is because I had books from an early age and was read to all the time. I think we should make a read across America day once a week, that way everyone would remember the importance of reading to their children. It would also give all of us an extra excuse to get to read Dr. Seuss books.
