How to Draw with Chalk Pastels

Linda Stamberger
Pastels are used by artists to give a blended effect in drawings and artwork created on art paper. They are used in the same way as oil, water and acrylic paints, only they come in crayon and chalk form, and are popular with illustrators. Some artists prefer pastels over paint, and use chalk pastels in the same way they would paint on canvas or canvas board.

Chalk pastels have the consistency of play chalk, only the chalk comes in neat sticks. A little goes a long way when it comes to pastels. Some artists prefer to fill in their drawings with pastels, or to begin a drawing with chalk pastel, for proper lines and shadings are easily to accomplish. Chalk pastels give a painting that classic look in half the time it takes using regular paint. Chalk pastels blend the right way, and there is not much room for making mistakes. All an artist has to do is take a bit of coarse paper, and blend the pastel colors together within their artwork. The look is stunning. Make your pastel artwork last by applying art sealer with a non-toxic aerosol over the artwork when finished.
