How to Make a Dream Pillow

Dream Pillows Help Promote Sleep and Well Being

Maddy Fox
Dream Pillows have been around for centuries and have been used to help promote sleep and well being. Dream pillows were filled with rose petals or other flowers to create a luxurious pillow for maiden's to lay their heads upon. Everyone enjoys the aromatic scent of flowers, making a dream pillow ideal for adults as well as children. Just follow the easy directions below and you will be on your way to a great nights sleep.

Your Dream pillow can be made into any shape or size you prefer, square, round, tubular etc. It's up to you. When choosing your fabrics, keep in mind who the dream pillow is for. Fabrics that are wonderful choices for women are: satin, velvet or cotton with a floral print. For men you might consider using flannel or soft cotton fabric with a solid, plaid or paisley print. For children any soft cotton fabric with characters or solid bold colors are great.

Materials

fabric
coordinating thread
polyester fill
potpourri
lavender
scented oils.

To make your dream pillow, take the fabric you have chosen and fold it over. Measure and cut the fabric to your determined size. Place the two fabrics together with the insides facing out. Insert straight pins about a 1/2 inch in from the edge of the fabric, all the way around leaving an opening large enough to stuff the dream pillow. Sew a 1/4 inch seam around the fabric. Carefully remove the pins and turn the pillow cover right side out.

Prepare your filling for the dream pillow. Take the potpourri you selected and remove any large or hard pieces, you want to use the softer buds, leaves etc. Place them in a coffee grinder and grind to small bits (not powder). If you don't have a coffee grinder than place them in a plastic bag and wrap the bag in a towel. Take a meat tenderizing mallet or hammer and pound the bag to break down the pieces of potpourri into tiny bits. Now open the bag and add 3 or 4 drops (to your liking) of scented oil to the potpourri and mix it in. If you prefer to use lavender (for insomnia), just add a few drops of lavender oil to the lavender to boost the scent.

Now stuff the dream pillow half full with the polyester fill, add about a 1/4 cup of the potpourri or 1/8 th cup of the lavender, than finish stuffing the pillow. Make sure not to over stuff the pillow, you want it to be full but still soft. Hand stitch the opening closed (or sew in a small zipper) and shake the pillow to disperse the potpourri or lavender and to fluff the pillow. Your dream pillow is finished and ready for use. Through time the aroma will begin to fade (this is where the zipper comes in handy), or just open a small corner of the hand stitched section to deposit more potpourri and stitch it closed. It only takes minutes and your pillow has been refreshed.
