How to Make Your Dream of Saving Lives a Reality

Keith Dailey
As children, the world is one's oyster. And because of this, children tend to dream big. You must remember your dreams as a child. Or you must have children who have said or done something like "I want to be a policeman / fireman / Superman when I grow up." An EMT is pretty close to this ambition. Wanting to save someone's life is actually quite a normal part of growing up, but sometimes along the way we tend to forget these childhood passions and dreams and are left with dreams that people start to call impossible or useless. Try to look within yourself, search for the dream, and get rid off it. Bring it back and realize that it can actually be done. Saving lives can actually be just as simple as giving someone a call or saying hello at the perfect time, or it can be as difficult as physically saving a life through the use of intravenous fluids or by inserting an airway device to help someone breathe with more help. Such skills can be learned through EMT courses, after which you can become a certified emergency medical technician.

If the dream is to become a fire fighter or a police officer, getting certification from the novice or beginner level is a necessity in EMT training. Beginner levels focus on learning basic skills of first aid and also simply assessing a victim and learning what proper courses of action one should take to help them. This level is also called the first responder EMT since those people that obtain this level of certification are either fire fighters or police officers who are usually the very first ones to react when a something happens.

The EMT-1 or EMT-Basic is the very first official EMT level for certification. This level requires skills that are needed in the first responders' level, along with several more skills in how to treat broken bones, emergency baby delivers, how to take care of blood-borne pathogens, and so forth. Certification will be received when this course is successfully completed, then registration will occur with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). The people who wish to learn more and further their EMT education can step onto the next level, which is the EMT-2 & 3 or EMT-Intermediate. This would require several more hours in the classroom, along with those required for the previous level. Learned skills will be increased in both intensity and detail. After finishing this course, applicants will obtain an EMT-Intermediate certification that will also be registered with the NREMT. To start with this level, registration with the NREMT is a necessity, along with the EMT-basic certification. As the skills are increased, the responsibilities are increased, as well, and more innovative ways are added to how you can react to a crisis that might come up in everyday life. If you decide to continue to the next level, you will have better chances in finding a job that pays more due to your level of experience and the skills and knowledge that you have learned along the way.

The very final level is the EMT-4 or EMT-Paramedic. This is the highest level you can possibly achieve as you become an emergency medical technician. Reaching this level will require around two thousand hours in a classroom, plus a hundred served hours in a hospital emergency room, as well as NREMT registration. Those that actually finish this level usually end up become physician's assistants or something even higher. By finishing this level, you will have a much better chance of getting very good jobs, which will put you in direct contact with emergency situations and people that will need your help. Although saving lives may not be your ultimate dream when you start out with these EMT courses, but later on, you may just end up saving lives anyway. Just by getting on with an education, you will be able to grant others with a second chance at life. Become an EMT today, enjoy life, and save someone else's.
