There are several reasons why you may have an upcoming court appearance. From county court, to village court and family court the reasons are endless. Having custody of a child who has a parent outside of the home can mean a lot of court dates, depending on how much trouble that other parent likes to create. Child support also creates court dates.

Regardless of the reason why you must go to court the fact remains that you must. A court date cannot be missed. Court dates are like appointments and are very important. Does how you dress matter? Does anyone care what you wear to a court date?

The answer is a big yes. The way that you dress says a lot about how seriously you take the matter at hand. The reason for the court appearance. At any court date you will be in front of the judge. A judge is a person of honor that deserves your utmost respect. Your respect should be shown through your actions, words, and appearance.

If you are to walk into the court room dressed in blue jeans and sneakers what do you suppose the judge will think? Will he or she know that you have respect for them and their court room? Will they assume that you are taking the matter at hand seriously? No, most likely not. Blue jeans and sneakers are casual wear. That's what you wear on your day off, or to clean the house.

The goal is not to impress and therefore win. It doesn't work like that. It doesn't matter what you wear when it comes to winning or losing, it's all about the facts and circumstances. However, dressing up a bit does show the judge, and the lawyers if any are involved, that you take the appearance seriously and that you have dressed respectively, and respectfully. This is always a good thing.

Men who have court dates should avoid wearing work clothes. Opt for nice slacks and a good shirt or sweater instead. A jacket and a tie can add the finishing touches to your professional and respectable look. It is best to wear dress shoes as well, not sneakers or work boots. Put on some cologne and make sure you are freshly shaved. The judge and who ever else is concerned will see that you put forth the effort to present your best side, and to respect the importance of the matter.

Women should also dress their best. A nice skirt and blouse, or a dress is best. However, there are many types of nice dress pants and slacks for women that would do nicely. Make up should never be overdone. A natural look is best. Keep the jewelry delicate and pretty rather than too flashy. When applying perfume do it lightly. An overbearing scent may not be appreciated in a small court room or chamber. Always make sure to wear comfortable yet attractive shoes. Toes that hurt tremendously won't do you any favors on your court day. However, you'll want your footwear to be classy, and to match your outfit.

What you wear to your court appearance can say a lot about you. The judge deserves your utmost respect. Show him or her that they have it by acting, and dressing respectively. Thanks for reading and take care!
