How to Dress for a Date: A Guide for Women

Wendy Brock
So you've got a date, but you don't know what to wear. This is a crisis many women face. It doesn't have to be stressful anymore. Just ask yourself a few questions and get ready to go on your date. Remember, a date should be fun, not stressful.

Once you know where you're going, it will be easier to decide what to wear. If you two are headed to a formal dinner, then you will definitely want to wear a classic black dress. If you two are headed to dinner, you can dress more casual, depending on the restaurant. If he's taking you to a bar, then jeans and a nice blouse will suffice.

Another question you need to ask yourself when picking out your attire is how do you want to present yourself. How you dress can let someone know what you think of yourself and how you want to be treated. For example, a low-cut blouse and short skirt with heels will indicate that you're not interested in a long term relationship. If you want your date to take you seriously and respect you, then you need to dress like you respect yourself. This is when the adage "less is more" does not work.

Your hair should obviously be clean and in a simple style. If you have long hair, straighten it. If you have short hair, style it, but don't go over the top with tons of hair products.

If you're a tall woman, wear flat shoes. Men are usually intimidated by taller women so keep your date feeling comfortable by staying the same height as he is. Just because he tells you he likes tall women, it doesn't mean he necessarily wants you to be taller than he is.

Keep accessories to a minimum. A pair of earrings, a necklace, a bracelet and a ring are nice additions if done right. You don't want to wear a lot of gaudy jewelry together. If you choose large hoop earrings then wear a simple necklace or skip the necklace altogether. It's a matter of balance. If you're unsure about your accessories, then remove one and see if you look better. When you're comfortable with your appearance, you'll have a much better time.

Wear your makeup in a classy way. This is definitely when you can say "less is more." Accent your true beauty and your best features with a little mascara and lipstick. If you wear bright red lipstick, not only will you have to worry about it smearing on your face, you probably won't get a kiss. Most men don't want to wear your lipstick.

Remember to be comfortable with yourself and have a great time. Presenting yourself in your best can make you feel great and really impress your date.
