How to Dress a Toddler to Play in the Snow

Emily Harmon
It's common sense that anyone going out to play in the snow needs to dress accordingly. Toddlers who are old enough to have fun in the snow, but not yet old enough to really tell you when they are getting too cold, are a special case when it comes to dressing appropriately for the snow. Before you send your little one out in the snow for sledding, snowball fights, and more, read this guide for dressing your toddler for playing in the snow.

Layers. Multiple layers are absolutely essential for going out with your toddler to play in the snow. Start with a set of close fitting pajamas. Add a layer of thick pants and a warm shirt over the pajamas (such as a sweatsuit). Then add a water resistant snowsuit on top of these two layers. A close fitting first layer is especially important for any toddler playing in the snow.

Accessories. Cold weather accessories are especially important for toddlers. Make sure your child's fingers, ears, and head are all covered thoroughly. A toddler should wear one pair of cotton mittens with a pair of waterproof mittens on top of them. Sure he will lose some dexterity but those tiny fingers need protection. Wrap a scarf around your child's neck and head and secure with a hat. Make sure the scarf covers her neck and ears and portions of her face, and that it is not wrapped too tightly.

Footwear. Don't send your toddler out to play in the snow without a pair of waterproof boots. Regular shoes will quickly let in cold and wetness. Purchase a pair of boots that are 1-2 sizes bigger than your child's normal shoe size. Put two pairs of socks on your toddler then insert his feet into the snow boots. Be sure to tuck the first two layers of pants down in the boots, rather than leaving them on the outside of the boots.

Protecting Exposed Areas. Once you have dressed your toddler appropriately to play in the snow, you still need to do a little work. Using a balm or petroleum jelly, protect the still exposed areas of your toddler's skin by smearing on a thin layer. Cover the lips, cheeks, forehead, and nose thoroughly with the balm to protect these sensitive areas from the cold wind and stinging snow.

You know how to best dress yourself to stay warm in the snow, but dressing a toddler takes a little extra precaution. Follow these tips for dressing your toddler for playing in the snow and you'll have a great time with your little one.
