How to Make Dried Floral Arrangements

Cheryl Dennett
Dried floral arrangements add a lovely element to your home d©cor. They can be expensive, though, if you buy them already made up. Here are some instructions to help you make dried floral arrangements to use in your home or give as gifts to your friends and family.

To assemble a flower arrangement you will need a container, some floral foam, assorted dried greens or herbs, assorted dried flower heads, assorted dried flowers with wire stems, and fast drying craft glue. The floral foam should be low to medium density. Choose flowers in colors that match the d©cor of the room where they will be placed. Start with a small and simple arrangement. Then, you can work your way up to something more complicated.

First you will need to cut a piece of floral foam into a rectangular shape that will fit snugly into the container and rise two inches above the top of the container. The extra height will allow you to insert the greens and flowers so that they make a graceful cascade. You will not be able to see the foam when the dried materials have been inserted. Slice the point corners from the top of the foam so that is has a slightly spherical shape. You can use a regular table knife for this task.

Poke the greens into the foam starting at the top. Work down on the sides next. The stems of the greens should be inserted to their halfway point so the arrangement will stay secure. Next you need to insert the flowers with the wire stems. Make some of the higher than the others. Be sure to keep the larger flowers to the bottom of the arrangements. The smaller flowers need to be used at the top.

Lastly use the craft glue to fasten the dried flower heads to the arrangement. Place them into the arrangement wherever they look most effective. If you would like some scent, use some essential oil. It should be dabbed on the underside of the greens.

Be sure to place your flower arrangement where it can be seen easily. If you are planning to use it in a dark room, the colors should be more intense. Lighter rooms will make better use of the softer shades.

No matter where you decide to use your dried floral arrangement, you will be glad you have learned to make them yourself. Not only will you save money, but you will have learned a skill the could make you money as well. Hopefully, these instruction will help you make all the dried flower arrangements you desire to use in your home or give as gifts.
