Necessary Supplies
To make a set of drink coasters using clay flowerpot saucers you'll need clay saucers of your choice, designs cut from posters, magazines, art-quality tissue paper, or gift wrap, decoupage glue, and high-gloss polyurethane. You'll also need newspaper to protect your work surface and a one-inch wide flat end paintbrush.
Procedure
Begin by cutting out paper shapes and designs of your choice, and make sure you have enough to completely cover the drink coasters you plan to decorate. I prefer using thin wrapping paper or art-quality tissue paper for this project. Art-quality tissue paper doesn't bleed when moistened with glue as does tissue paper used for gift wrapping. Ordinary wrapping paper conforms well to the curves of the saucers, and it also looks great when used to embellish clay coasters.
Once you have dozens of pieces of paper of your choice, cover the inside of the first clay saucer with decoupage glue. Randomly apply the first piece of paper, and brush more glue over the paper. Overlap pieces, and continue applying the paper until the inside and rim of the saucer is completely covered. Allow it to dry completely after it has a generous but even coating of decoupage glue. Turn it over to cover the underside with paper and decoupage glue using the same procedure.
Once the decoupage glue has completely dried all the way through, provide adequate ventilation, and cover the coasters on all sides with high-gloss polyurethane spray. Allow the gloss to dry completely before handling or using the coasters. No one will believe they were made with ordinary clay flowerpot saucers!
Gift Giving Ideas
Drink coasters made with clay flowerpot saucers make fantastic gifts, and they're a wonderful addition to a gift basket. Fill an attractive wicker basket with shredded tissue paper, and top it with the set of coasters, matching coffee mugs, and packages of instant cappuccino, flavored coffee, or gourmet hot cocoa. Anyone who receives this gift will absolutely love it, especially since the coasters were uniquely decorated and designed from the heart.
